Arthur Fils Makes Childhood Dream Come True with ATP Finals Berth

“It’s A Childhood Dream”: Arthur Fils Celebrates ATP Finals Qualification
Arthur Fils secured his first ATP Finals qualification after beating Tomáš Macháč 6-3, 7-6(4) at the Paris Masters.
He described the achievement as a childhood dream come true.
Fils has qualified for the 2026 ATP Finals in Turin after a big day at the Paris Masters.
He secured his place after fellow Frenchman Quentin Halys defeated Frances Tiafoe.
Fils celebrated by beating Czech player Tomas Machac 6-3, 7-6(4) in front of his home fans.
The 22-year-old will now face American Taylor Fritz in the next round of 16.
After this win, Fils spoke about how his childhood dream of playing at the ATP Finals finally came true.
He also talked about the warm support he received from the crowd.
He said how excited he is to compete in Turin.
FILS THANKS HALYS AFTER SECURING ATP FINALS PLACE
Fils was following Halys's match closely because its result could decide his qualification.
When Halys won, Fils knew he had earned enough points to reach the ATP Finals.
He thanked his fellow Frenchman for helping make the moment possible.
“It’s a day I won’t forget,” Fils told TennisActu.
“I followed Quentin’s match closely, I have to thank him for his win, which allowed me to relax a bit for tonight.”
The young Frenchman was delighted to achieve something he had dreamed about since childhood.
The ATP Finals bring together the eight leading singles players of the season.
This gives Fils the chance to compete against the best names in men's tennis.
“It’s a childhood dream, I’m very happy to take part this year and I hope I can play it more often, almost every year,” he said.
“I just want to enjoy it.”
Fils has enjoyed a big season.
It includes winning his first Masters 1000 title in Cincinnati.
His qualification is another important step in his rise.
HOME CROWD GIVES FILS CHILLS BEFORE FRITZ TEST
The Paris Masters was especially emotional because Fils was playing in front of French fans after 18 months away from the competition.
He wanted to enjoy the welcome.
So he even removed his headphones before walking onto the court.
“I took off my headphones, which I never do, just so I could feel that atmosphere,” he said.
“I walked out there and I had chills.”
His next match against Fritz will be a difficult challenge.
Fils watched the American play earlier and knows he must bring his best tennis.
“Not easy, on indoor hard,” he admitted.
“I watched him today, he played very well. It will be a huge test.”
FILS IS FRANCE'S NEXT GRAND SLAM HOPE
Arthur Fils is the leading contender to become France’s next Grand Slam singles champion.
France’s last Grand Slam singles champion was Marion Bartoli, who won Wimbledon in 2013.
However, it has been even longer since the last French man won a major title.
Yannick Noah won Roland Garros 43 years ago.
The current top French ATP player is Fils.
He is the current world number seven.
He has qualified for the ATP Finals this year after a breakthrough season.
This includes winning his first Masters 1000 title at the Cincinnati Open.

There are a lot of hopes for Fils, who is still only 22 years old.
Grand Slam doubles champion Patrick McEnroe has revealed if he thinks Fils has got what it takes to win a major.
McEnroe spoke to Tennis Actu TV about Fils.
He was asked for his verdict on the Frenchman.
Fils has been through many physical issues in recent years.
He played just two matches in nine months before returning to the ATP Tour in February after being sidelined with a stress fracture in his lower back.
McEnroe stated his belief that if Fils can remain fit then he has what it takes to win a Grand Slam title.
“I like him a lot, he is an excellent player,” McEnroe said about Fils.
“I hope he can play all the time because he has been injured for a long time, but if he can play during the season I believe he can win a Grand Slam.”
With Fils having qualified for the ATP Finals, becoming the first Frenchman to do so since the now-retired Gael Monfils in 2016, McEnroe was asked about the year-end tournament.
He was asked if it is even harder than winning a Grand Slam.
“It’s only the eight players, the top eight players from the world,” said McEnroe.
“It’s very special for the players and the elite of everyone.”
McEnroe added, “I think both are very difficult, but maybe the Grand Slams [are bigger] because there’s a lot of pressure and a lot of weeks but it’s very difficult to win the Tour Finals too.”
FILIS'S GRAND SLAM RECORD SO FAR
Despite Fils having broken into the top 10 this year after winning the Cincinnati Masters and the Barcelona Open, he has not been able to make the same breakthroughs at Grand Slam tournaments.
Fils has never reached the quarter-finals of any major tournament so far in his career.
The Australian Open and Roland Garros are the two Grand Slams where he has his best results.
But he has yet to advance past the fourth round at any of them.
His best Grand Slam result is reaching the fourth round at the Australian Open and at Roland Garros.
At Wimbledon and the US Open, he has not gone past the third round.
This is a gap in his resume that he will look to close in 2027.
McEnroe's confidence in Fils's potential suggests that the Frenchman has the game to compete at the highest level.
The key, according to McEnroe, is staying healthy.
Fils has dealt with multiple injuries already in his young career.
The stress fracture in his lower back kept him out for months.
If he can avoid major injuries, McEnroe believes a Grand Slam title is within reach.
WHAT COMES NEXT FOR FILS
Fils will now prepare for his round of 16 match against Taylor Fritz at the Paris Masters.
A win there would keep his momentum going heading into Turin.
The ATP Finals will be held in Turin, Italy, from November 15 to November 22, 2026.
Fils will join the other seven top players of the season.
The field includes Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz, and Novak Djokovic, among others.
For Fils, just being in that company is the fulfillment of a childhood dream.
But he has made it clear he does not want this to be a one-time appearance.
“I hope I can play it more often, almost every year,” he said.
His 2026 season has already been a career-best.
Winning the Cincinnati Masters put him on the map as a top-tier player.
Now, with an ATP Finals berth, he has cemented his status as one of the best in the world.
The question now is whether he can carry this form into the Grand Slams next year.
Patrick McEnroe believes he can.
Fils himself seems determined to prove his doubters wrong.
For French tennis fans, the wait for a male Grand Slam champion might finally be coming to an end.
And it all started with a win in Paris, in front of a crowd that gave him chills.
