Dana White urges Gaethje to accept Volkanovski super fight

Dana White is pressing Justin Gaethje to make a decision on his fighting future.
The UFC CEO wants the lightweight champion to either commit to a super fight with Alexander Volkanovski or announce his retirement.
White made his position clear during a recent appearance on The Jim Rome Show.
The comments came after Volkanovski called for a champion-versus-champion matchup with Gaethje.
Volkanovski, the UFC featherweight champion, finished Movsar Evloev at UFC 333 earlier this year.
He then immediately turned his attention to Gaethje’s lightweight title.
“I would pretty much do anything for Alexander Volkanovski at this point in his career,” White told Rome.
“Great guy, great athlete, great champion.”
But White said the decision ultimately rests with Gaethje.
“The big question is: what does Justin Gaethje wanna do?” White said.
“Justin, coming off this unbelievable win at the White House. He’s an incredible athlete too; what does he wanna do next?”
Gaethje won the undisputed lightweight championship by finishing Ilia Topuria at UFC Freedom 250 in June 2026.
The event took place at the White House, a historic first for the promotion.
Since that victory, Gaethje has been non-committal about his future.
He has left the door open to hanging up his gloves and vacating the lightweight belt.
White said the promotion is still in talks with Gaethje but needs an answer soon.
“I don’t know yet… We’re talking to him, but we’ll figure it out,” White said.
“He’s going to have to pull the trigger one way or another.”
Volkanovski has acknowledged that top lightweight contender Arman Tsarukyan deserves the next title shot.
Tsarukyan is coming off a win over Mauricio Ruffy at UFC 331.

Volkanovski has expressed willingness to face Tsarukyan for a vacant championship if Gaethje retires.
White’s patience with indecisive champions appears thin.
The UFC CEO recently expressed frustration with welterweight titleholder Islam Makhachev after Makhachev reportedly backed out of a verbal agreement to fight at UFC 336.
Gaethje’s decision could come in the coming weeks.
A super fight with Volkanovski would be a massive draw for the promotion.
Volkanovski is widely considered one of the greatest featherweights in UFC history.
He has held the 145-pound title since 2019 and has defended it multiple times.
A move up to lightweight would put him in position to become a two-division champion.
Gaethje, meanwhile, has built a reputation as one of the most exciting fighters in the sport.
His aggressive style and knockout power have made him a fan favorite.
The matchup between the two champions is one that fans have wanted for years.
White acknowledged that he is willing to make the fight happen.
“I would pretty much do anything for Alexander Volkanovski at this point in his career,” he repeated.
The statement signals that the UFC is ready to green-light the bout.
The only obstacle is Gaethje’s uncertainty about his own future.
If Gaethje chooses to retire, the lightweight title would likely become vacant.
Volkanovski and Tsarukyan would then be the leading candidates to fight for the belt.
But if Gaethje decides to continue fighting, a super fight with Volkanovski appears to be the top option.
White’s message to Gaethje was direct: make a decision.
“He’s going to have to pull the trigger one way or another,” White said.

The UFC is not accustomed to waiting indefinitely on champions.
Gaethje’s next move will shape the entire lightweight division.
The 155-pound weight class is one of the deepest in the UFC.
Fighters like Tsarukyan, Charles Oliveira, and Islam Makhachev are all potential contenders.
But a Gaethje vs. Volkanovski super fight would bypass the traditional title hierarchy.
It would be a rare champion-versus-champion matchup.
The UFC has a history of making such fights when both fighters are willing.
Examples include Conor McGregor vs. Eddie Alvarez and Amanda Nunes vs. Cris Cyborg.
Volkanovski has made it clear he wants the challenge.
He called out Gaethje immediately after his win over Evloev.
“I want the lightweight title,” Volkanovski said in the octagon after UFC 333.
“Justin Gaethje, let’s make it happen.”
Gaethje has not publicly responded to the callout.
His silence has left the UFC and fans in limbo.
White’s comments on The Jim Rome Show were the strongest indication yet that the promotion is growing impatient.
The UFC CEO is known for his hands-on approach to matchmaking.
When he wants a fight to happen, he usually finds a way to make it.
But he cannot force a fighter to continue competing.
If Gaethje decides to retire, the UFC will have to move on.
White’s praise for Volkanovski suggests the promotion values the featherweight champion highly.

“I would pretty much do anything for Alexander Volkanovski at this point in his career,” White said.
That level of support from the UFC CEO is rare.
It indicates that Volkanovski has earned significant goodwill from the organization.
The Australian fighter has been a company man throughout his career.
He has never turned down a fight and has always been willing to step up on short notice.
His willingness to move up to lightweight for a super fight is consistent with his approach.
Gaethje, by contrast, has been more selective since winning the title.
He has not fought since his win over Topuria in June.
The layoff has fueled speculation about his future.
Some believe Gaethje may be considering retirement after a long and brutal career.
Others think he is simply waiting for the right opportunity.
White’s comments suggest he believes Gaethje is genuinely undecided.
“I don’t know yet… We’re talking to him,” White said.
The uncertainty is unusual for a champion of Gaethje’s stature.
Most champions are eager to defend their titles and build their legacies.
Gaethje has already achieved a great deal in the sport.
He is a former interim lightweight champion and now the undisputed champion.
His fight with Topuria at the White House was one of the most memorable events in UFC history.
The win cemented his status as one of the best lightweights of his era.
But at 37 years old, Gaethje may be considering life after fighting.

He has been in numerous wars inside the octagon.
His style of fighting — brawling and absorbing damage — has raised questions about his long-term health.
Many fighters in similar positions have chosen to retire rather than risk further damage.
White’s message to Gaethje was delivered publicly, which adds pressure.
The UFC CEO rarely calls out champions in such a direct manner.
It suggests that White wants the situation resolved quickly.
Volkanovski, meanwhile, is at the peak of his powers.
The featherweight champion has looked dominant in his recent fights.
He has expressed a desire to fight at lightweight before the end of his career.
A win over Gaethje would make him a two-division champion, a rare achievement.
Only a handful of fighters in UFC history have held titles in two weight classes simultaneously.
Volkanovski believes he can join that elite group.
White seems willing to give him the opportunity.
“I would pretty much do anything for Alexander Volkanovski at this point in his career,” White said.
The ball is now in Gaethje’s court.
His decision will determine the direction of the lightweight division for the next year.
If he fights Volkanovski, the winner would likely face Tsarukyan next.
If he retires, the title becomes vacant and a new champion will be crowned.
Either way, White wants an answer.
“He’s going to have to pull the trigger one way or another,” White said.
The UFC is ready to move forward.
The only question is whether Gaethje will join them or step away.
