Haas confirms new F1 driver debut and Ocon's fate

Haas has confirmed that Esteban Ocon will not return to a race seat for the remainder of the 2026 Formula 1 season.

The decision comes after a heated confrontation between Ocon and team principal Ayao Komatsu during the Mexico City Grand Prix weekend.

Ocon was first replaced by reserve driver Ryo Hirakawa for the Mexico City Grand Prix.

Hirakawa went on to score a point on his F1 debut after post-race penalties were applied to Oscar Piastri, Pierre Gasly and Franco Colapinto.

Now, Haas has made the call permanent for the rest of the year.

Rafael Camara, a 21-year-old Brazilian rookie from the Ferrari Driver Academy, will take Ocon's seat starting this weekend at the São Paulo Grand Prix.

Camara was originally set to drive for Haas starting in the 2027 season.

Instead, he will make his F1 race debut early — and on home soil at Interlagos.

“We have now notified Esteban Ocon that he will not return to a race seat with TGR Haas F1 Team this season,” Komatsu said in a statement.

“Such decisions are never made lightly, as was the case in Mexico City – but then, as now, we feel this is firmly in the best interest of the team moving forward.”

Komatsu added: “The conversations that ultimately unfolded between the team and Esteban remain an internal matter, and we will continue to respect the private nature of closed-door situations.”

The content of the discussion between Ocon and Komatsu has not been made public.

There were reports of a physical altercation over a disagreement on tire choice, but Ocon has categorically rejected those claims.

What is known is that the exchange was severe enough for Haas to remove Ocon from the car immediately.

For Ocon, this marks the end of a short and turbulent tenure with the American team.

He joined Haas for the 2025 season after leaving Alpine at the end of 2024.

Ocon is a veteran of 198 Grands Prix across a 10-year career with six different teams.

He first broke onto the F1 grid in 2016 with Manor, then drove for Force India, Racing Point, Renault and Alpine before joining Haas.

Ocon is a graduate of the Mercedes driver academy.

Toto Wolff, Mercedes team principal, reportedly considered Ocon for a Mercedes seat in 2020.

According to BBC Sport, Wolff ultimately decided against it, fearing a Hamilton-Ocon pairing would be “too combustible.”

Wolff’s concerns appear to have been justified over time.

Ocon had multiple on-track collisions with Sergio Perez during their time together at Force India and Racing Point.

He later fell out with Fernando Alonso at Alpine.

More recently, there have been high-profile incidents with Pierre Gasly and Oliver Bearman.

According to the BBC, both Haas and Alpine have noticed the “same pattern” when Ocon struggles — he “becomes defensive” and blames the team or the car rather than taking responsibility.

This pattern may have been a factor in the Mexico City confrontation that led to his exit.

Haas had already announced in October 2026 that Ocon would be replaced for the 2027 season by Camara.

But the early termination means Ocon’s Haas career ends four races before schedule.

The remaining races on the 2026 calendar are São Paulo, Las Vegas, Qatar and Abu Dhabi.

Camara, who is part of the Ferrari Driver Academy, expressed gratitude for the opportunity.

“I’m grateful to TGR Haas F1 Team for giving me this opportunity, and I also want to thank Ferrari for their continued support,” Camara said.

“Making my Formula 1 debut in Brazil is a special moment for me.

“I know there is a lot to learn, and my focus is on working closely with the team, understanding the car and doing the best job I can this weekend.”

Fellow Haas driver Oliver Bearman will be eager to bounce back after successive retirements.
