Hot mic catches Pegula calling Andreeva a "diva" before WTA Finals.

Hot mic catches Pegula calling Andreeva a "diva" before WTA Finals.

Jessica Pegula was caught on a live microphone criticizing Mirra Andreeva and her coach during a WTA Finals practice session in Indian Wells.

The audio was captured during a broadcast of practice sessions on the WTA’s YouTube channel.

Pegula, the world No. 5 and chair of the WTA Player Council, appeared unaware her words were being recorded.

She was overheard talking after Andreeva left the court following a practice session between the two players.

“I think she’s a nice girl, but a bit of a diva,” Pegula said, according to the audio clip.

“She needs to be more humble.”

Pegula then described the 19-year-old French Open champion as “super talented, but mentally she’s kind of…” and made a gesture suggesting instability.

The American also criticized Andreeva’s coach, Conchita Martinez.

“I like Conchita, but I’ve lost a bit of respect for her,” Pegula said.

She complained that Martinez does not keep Andreeva in line.

Pegula then described a specific incident during the practice session.

“If I were her coach and my player had just played four great games, she’s up 4-0, she gets mad at me and chases me down… I’d tell her not to talk to me like that,” Pegula was overheard saying.

The WTA deleted the live streams from their YouTube channel after the clip went viral.

But because the practice session had been broadcast live, the recorded clip had already spread across social media.

Pegula and Andreeva are in different groups at the WTA Finals in Indian Wells.

As a result, they can only meet on court if both players advance to the knockout stage.

That potential semifinal matchup would be their first singles meeting.

The two players have never played a singles match against each other.

They have met three times in doubles and mixed doubles.

Andreeva holds a 2-1 lead in their head-to-head across all formats.

Their first match came at the 2025 Qatar Open.

There, Andreeva and her partner Diana Shnaider defeated Pegula and Ashlyn Krueger 4-6, 6-3, 10-7 in a match tiebreak.

Pegula got revenge later in 2025 at the US Open mixed doubles tournament.

Playing with Jack Draper, Pegula defeated Andreeva and Daniil Medvedev 4-1, 4-1 in the quarterfinals.

Their most recent meeting came at the 2026 Italian Open.

Andreeva and Shnaider defeated Pegula and Storm Hunter 6-1, 6-2 in the semifinals.

Pegula is expected to face questions about the incident during pre-tournament media sessions.

The opening matches of the WTA Finals are scheduled for Sunday.

The Indian Wells site is where the practice session took place and where the tournament is now being held.

The WTA Player Council, which Pegula chairs, is the body that represents players in discussions with the tour.

Pegula’s role as council chair adds weight to her comments about player conduct.

The hot-mic incident has become the dominant story ahead of the WTA Finals.

Neither Pegula nor Andreeva has made a public statement about the remarks since the clip emerged.

The WTA has not commented on why the footage was removed from YouTube.

Practice sessions at WTA events are often streamed live on the tour’s digital platforms.

These streams are typically not edited in real time, allowing unguarded comments to be broadcast.

The incident echoes similar hot-mic controversies in other sports where private conversations were accidentally made public.

Tennis has seen previous cases of on-court microphones picking up player comments during matches.

But a practice session conversation caught in this manner is less common.

The WTA Finals features the top eight singles players and doubles teams of the season.

Andreeva qualified after winning the French Open in June 2026, her first Grand Slam title.

Pegula qualified based on her consistent results throughout the season.

The tournament uses a round-robin format with two groups of four players.

Group winners and runners-up advance to the semifinals.

Pegula and Andreeva are in separate groups, meaning they cannot meet before the semifinals.
