Hughes silences doubters with a dominant Breeders' Cup win

Hughes silenced doubters with a dominant Breeders' Cup Juvenile win.

The Bob Baffert-trained colt answered every question put to him in the Grade 1 race at Del Mar.

He fought every step on the lead.

He held off American History and stablemate Salahudin by 2 1/4 lengths.

His final time was 1:42.27, with a final sixteenth in 6.29 seconds.

He earned a 101 Brisnet Speed Rating.

This was not a soft trip.

His quarter splits were 23.43, 46.62, 1:10.86, and 1:35.98.

Hughes is now 5-for-5 lifetime.

He has open-lengths wins in the American Pharoah (G1), Del Mar Futurity (G1), and Best Pal (G3).

He demolished maidens by six lengths in his debut.

The bay colt by Into Mischief out of K P Dreamin has earned $1,520,000 in five starts.

He leads the Kentucky Derby 2027 leaderboard with 40 points.

His nearest competitor, American History, has 25.

But the question that follows Hughes everywhere is about his pedigree.

Into Mischief is already a legend.

He is the sire of three Kentucky Derby winners: Authentic (2020), Mandaloun (2021), and Sovereignty (2026).

Only six stallions in history have sired three Derby winners.

No stallion has ever sired four.

The 21-year-old Into Mischief still has time.

But the path is not automatic.

Mandaloun's win came via the disqualification of Medina Spirit, who crossed the finish line first.

Hughes is the third foal out of K P Dreamin, a Union Rags mare.

Three of his first four dams own black type and produced black-type runners.

His female family is improving.

But here is the twist that pedigree analysts watch closely.

Hughes has two full brothers — same sire, same dam.

Neither is accomplished.

Career Risk won a $16,000 maiden claiming event at Tampa Bay.

Travieso did not win in four starts at Gulfstream.

The reason is genetic probability.

Full same-sex siblings share only 50% of inherited genes.

Each foal gets half its nuclear DNA from the sire and half from the dam.

But the parents pass a different assortment each time.

Hughes got the lucky draw.

His yearling half-brother by Elite Power, named Grip It and Rip It, brought $400,000 at the Keeneland September sale.

There is also an unnamed half-brother by the same sire.

The market believes in this female family.

But the betting public is not fully sold on Hughes yet.

In Kentucky Derby Future Wager Pool 1, which closed October 30, 2026, U.S.S. Valor was the individual favorite at 6.92-1.

Hughes closed at 8.52-1.

That was before the Breeders' Cup Juvenile.

The next betting window, Pool 2, opens November 26, 2026, at 12:00 p.m. ET.

It runs through November 29 at 6:00 p.m. ET.

There are six pools total for the 2027 Kentucky Derby.

The Derby itself is Saturday, May 1, 2027, at 1 1/4 miles on dirt at Churchill Downs.

Post time is TBA.

NBC will televise the race.

The Kentucky Derby Future Wager is a pari-mutuel pool run by Churchill Downs.

Each pool has 40 betting interests: 38 named horses, "All Fillies," and "All Other Colts and Geldings."

Odds lock when the pool closes.

Win bets have a $2 minimum.

Exactas have a $2 minimum, or $1 for boxes and wheels.

Takeout is 17.5% on win bets and 22% on exactas.

Meanwhile, the Road to the Derby continues to expand.

The Virginia Derby at Colonial Downs will remain an official qualifier for 2027.

Governor Abigail Spanberger announced the news on Thursday.

The race is scheduled for March 13, 2027.
