Lando Norris booed in Mexico as fans rally behind Piastri

Lando Norris was booed by fans at the Mexico City Grand Prix last weekend.

It happened in the famous stadium section during the drivers’ parade on Sunday.

This is the second year in a row Norris has received that reception at the same circuit.

In 2025, he was loudly jeered after his dominant victory in the race.

Sky Sports F1’s Craig Slater was in the grandstand and described the reaction.

“Mixed boos and cheers, let’s say, for Lando Norris,” Slater said.

“It’s interesting who got the boos.”

The consensus among observers is that the hostility stems from the treatment of Oscar Piastri last season.

Piastri is Norris’ teammate at McLaren.

Last year, the two were fighting for the drivers’ championship.

At the Italian Grand Prix in Monza, Piastri was leading the race.

McLaren gave Norris a slow pit stop, allowing Piastri to stay ahead.

Then the team ordered Piastri to hand the position back to Norris.

Piastri obeyed without public complaint.

He lost only three points at Monza and finished 13 points behind Norris in the final standings.

But the moment became a symbol of what many fans saw as unfair treatment.

Piastri himself has always said he was treated fairly last year.

“Ever the team player,” the F1 Oversteer report notes, “Piastri himself downplays the significance of that moment whenever the subject comes up.”

Still, a section of the fanbase has not let it go.

Norris’ reception in Mexico shows that unease is still alive.

The situation was inflamed by a recent incident involving Norris and Franco Colapinto.

At the Azerbaijan Grand Prix earlier this season, Norris and Colapinto collided, ending both their races.

Afterward, Norris called for Colapinto to be banned from the sport.

Colapinto is one of four native Spanish speakers on the F1 grid.

Mexico is a Spanish-speaking country with a passionate fanbase.

Norris later apologized publicly and privately for his comments.

But the remark may have added to the crowd’s anger in Mexico City.

Just last month, Norris also collided with Piastri in the Singapore Sprint.

That incident brought McLaren’s driver management back into focus.

Norris was initially bullish in his response before expressing regret.

But the Singapore incident was minor compared to Monza.

There was an expectation that Piastri would fight for the title again this year.

McLaren did not deliver a competitive enough car in 2026.

Piastri has also struggled individually this season.

As a result, he is not in championship contention.

Norris, meanwhile, is not on the podium in Mexico either.

He finished outside the top three, which spared him from a more prominent public jeering.

Had the booing occurred during a podium ceremony, it would have received more attention.

But the drivers’ parade incident was caught by Sky’s cameras.
