Liverpool teen steals UCL dribble crown from Lamine Yamal

An 18-year-old Liverpool winger has quietly overtaken Barcelona's Lamine Yamal to become the most prolific dribbler in this season's Champions League.

Rio Ngumoha has completed 22 dribbles in the 2026/27 competition, according to official UCL statistics.

That is six more than Yamal, who sits in second place with 16.

Ngumoha has achieved the feat in just 285 minutes of Champions League football.

Yamal, by contrast, has played every minute of Barcelona's four group-stage matches so far.

The teenager's dribble count is even more striking when broken down by game.

In Liverpool's 3-2 defeat at Fenerbahce on Wednesday, Ngumoha completed seven dribbles in only 65 minutes before being substituted off in the second half.

He was also fouled four times during that match, earning Liverpool dangerous set-piece positions.

Ngumoha's previous start came against Villarreal, where he recorded two assists and was named Man of the Match in Liverpool's 4-3 victory.

Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola has largely used Ngumoha as a substitute in the Premier League this season.

But in the Champions League, the winger has regularly started and consistently shown the technique, pace and power to beat his marker in one-on-one duels.

Former Liverpool left-back Andy Robertson, who played alongside Ngumoha earlier in the teenager's Anfield career, has described him in glowing terms.

Robertson declared that Ngumoha has an 'amazing future' ahead of him.

The full Champions League dribble standings place Ngumoha at the top, with Yamal second on 16.

AEK Athens' Aboubakary Koita and Shakhtar Donetsk's Alisson Santana are tied in third place with 15 ball carries each.

Crystal Palace's Michael Olise sits in fifth place.

Ngumoha's rise comes at a moment when Yamal's name is also making headlines for other reasons.

Earlier this week, Yamal broke Kylian Mbappe's record for the most Champions League goals scored before turning 20.

Yamal opened the scoring against Aston Villa in Barcelona's 3-0 win, notching his 14th UCL goal before his 20th birthday in July 2027.

That record had previously been held by the Real Madrid forward.

Yamal was also a finalist for the 2026 Ballon d'Or, finishing behind winner Harry Kane and runner-up Kylian Mbappe.

His father subsequently made explosive claims about Spain's national team setup in the wake of that result.

But on the Champions League dribble front, the crown has now passed to Liverpool's teenage prodigy.

The Champions League group stage continues through December, with the top eight teams advancing directly to the Round of 16.

Liverpool currently sit in the top half of the standings despite their defeat at Fenerbahce.

Ngumoha's playing time in the Premier League remains limited, but his Champions League performances are building a case for more minutes.

With 22 dribbles from 285 minutes, his rate of one successful dribble every 13 minutes is the best among the competition's top five dribblers.

Yamal, by comparison, averages one dribble every 15 minutes across his four full matches.

The 18-year-old Liverpool winger joined the club from Chelsea's academy in 2024.

He has been described by club insiders as one of the most promising wide players to emerge from English youth football in recent years.

Ngumoha is eligible to represent England at international level.

His dribbling style combines close ball control with explosive acceleration, making him difficult to defend in one-on-one situations.

Opponents have increasingly resorted to fouling him, as the Fenerbahce match demonstrated.
