Melania Trump Hosts Rare Russia-Ukraine Meeting at the White House

First lady Melania Trump will host representatives from Russia and Ukraine at the White House on Thursday, marking the first time both sides have met face-to-face at the executive mansion since the war began in 2022.

The meeting builds on an unprecedented humanitarian ceasefire she helped broker between the warring sides in the town of Oleshky, located in Ukraine’s southern Kherson region.

The White House called the gathering “an extraordinary moment in American history” in a statement announcing Thursday’s event.

It remains unclear exactly what the meeting was designed to achieve or whether President Donald Trump or any of his envoys will attend.

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the agenda or expected outcomes.

The losses suffered by Republicans in the midterm elections dealt a setback to President Trump and his foreign policy, injecting uncertainty into the American approach to the conflict.

Those elections saw Democrats seize control of the House and Senate and win several key gubernatorial races.

Despite the political headwinds, the first lady has continued her independent diplomatic push.

The ceasefire she helped arrange lasted from Oct. 27 to Nov. 1 — six days that the White House described as the longest localized pause in hostilities since the war started.

That pause allowed for the evacuation of hundreds of residents from Oleshky, a Russian-occupied town where about 2,000 people were on the brink of starvation.

The evacuation followed a humanitarian operation that began on Oct. 27, with the main phase starting on Oct. 30 after demining operations and the delivery of humanitarian aid.

The first lady’s office described the achievement as “an unprecedented diplomatic initiative by an American First Lady.”

The White House said the first lady independently initiated engagement between the two warring countries and secured a ceasefire in Oleshky and surrounding areas of Kherson Oblast.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy awarded Melania Trump the Order of Princess Olga, 1st Class — Ukraine’s highest honor for women — for her role in brokering the Oleshky truce.

Now she is bringing the negotiators to the White House.

WHO WILL ATTEND

Russia will be represented by Kirill Dmitriev, President Vladimir Putin’s special envoy and head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund, according to the Kremlin.

Russia’s human rights commissioner, Yana Lantratova, who coordinated the humanitarian ceasefire on the Russian side, is also expected to attend.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the two Russian officials plan to meet Melania Trump on Thursday “provided that all logistical arrangements work out.”

Ukraine has not officially confirmed who will attend the meeting from its side.

But David Arakhamia, the head of President Zelenskyy’s ruling faction in parliament, will be part of the country’s delegation, his office told NBC News.

Ukrainian media reported that Dmytro Lubinets, Ukraine’s parliamentary commissioner for human rights, will also be in attendance.

The presence of these high-level officials signals that both sides are treating the meeting seriously.
