Missouri Waits On Elite Eight Veteran Jaylen Carey Following Indefinite Suspension

Jaylen Carey arrived at Missouri in April after playing in 37 games and helping lead Tennessee to an Elite Eight appearance last season.

Now, the Tigers find themselves waiting to see when their new interior anchor can actually take the floor.

Missouri men's basketball head coach Dennis Gates confirmed on Nov. 2 that Carey has been suspended indefinitely.

Gates stated that the senior transfer was sidelined for a "violation of team rules."

The head coach did not offer an exact timetable for the forward's return to game action.

When asked for further details by the Columbia Daily Tribune, Gates chose not to elaborate on the nature of the infraction.

The disciplinary action leaves Missouri without its projected starting center as the regular season gets underway.

UNCERTAINTY IN THE FRONTCOURT

Carey had previously taken part in the Tigers' pro day practice on Oct. 11.

His absence became apparent shortly afterward when exhibition play began.

Carey did not dress or play in Missouri's exhibition contest against Kansas State on Oct. 23.

He was also held out of the program's final exhibition matchup against UNLV on Oct. 29.

Despite the indefinite label, Dennis Gates offered clarifying context regarding the suspension to CBS Sports.

Gates told CBS Sports that Carey's violation would not jeopardize his long-term standing with the team.

The Tigers' head coach also indicated that the sit-out is not expected to be a prolonged absence.

Even so, Carey's availability for a pivotal upcoming showdown against Saint Louis remains completely unresolved.

Missouri is left to manage its opening stretch of games without a definitive date for his comeback.

A PROVEN MARCH MADNESS RESUME

Carey brings significant high-major experience and size to Columbia.

Standing 6-foot-8 and weighing 255 pounds, he was brought in to provide muscle in the paint.

Carey officially committed to transfer to Missouri from Tennessee on April 13.

His college journey began before his time in Knoxville, featuring previous stops at James Madison and Vanderbilt.

During his lone campaign with Tennessee, Carey established himself as a reliable interior contributor.

He appeared in all 37 games for the Volunteers last season while earning eight starts.

Over that stretch, Carey averaged 7.4 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 1.3 assists per contest.

He converted 48.7 percent of his attempts from the field for the Vols.

More importantly, Carey served as a core rotation piece during Tennessee's postseason march to the Elite Eight.

That level of tournament seasoning made him an invaluable transfer portal acquisition for Dennis Gates.

ROSTER TURMOIL BEFORE TIP-OFF

The suspension of Carey represents only part of a chaotic pre-season stretch for Missouri's coaching staff.

The Tigers were also blindsided by a major roster loss on the perimeter just hours before the season opener.

Missouri guard CJ Gunn was ruled permanently ineligible by the Southeastern Conference.

Gates received the official ruling from the league office less than two days before Tuesday's opening game against Cleveland State.

Gunn, a four-year collegiate player who spent his last two seasons at DePaul, was expected to provide backcourt depth.

His collegiate career ended over a minor professional payout received during the summer.

Gunn received $524 after appearing in three games in the Canadian Elite Basketball League in May.

The SEC had passed a strict rule over the summer barring athletes who sign professional contracts post-enrollment.

Under that policy, any football or men's basketball player who signs a pro deal after starting college cannot play in the SEC.

Gates confirmed that Gunn earned less than $600 and had already paid the money back.

Nonetheless, the conference enforced the regulation strictly as the deadline to finalize rosters arrived on Monday evening.

No appeal option was made available to Missouri or Gunn.

Because the ruling came so late, Gunn also missed out on the NBA G League draft, which occurred in October.

CONFERENCE PRECEDENT AND STAKES

The SEC's firm stance with Gunn mirrored its handling of LSU player RJ Luis.

Luis had stepped away from college basketball following the 2025 season and sought to return under Will Wade.

By enforcing the rule without exception, the SEC avoided opening the door for legal challenges from other conference members.

For Missouri, the administrative blow removed an experienced guard from a team targeting national relevance.

Losing Gunn permanently leaves the Tigers thinner than anticipated across the perimeter.
