Sophie Cunningham Tells Theo Von Nothing Can Keep Him from God’s Love

Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham appeared on episode 692 of Theo Von’s podcast This Past Weekend.

She did not come to talk about basketball.

She came to talk about faith.

During the interview, Von told Cunningham he wished his connection with God were stronger.

Cunningham responded with a direct statement.

“Nothing a person does or doesn’t do can separate them from God’s love,” she said.

She continued: “There’s nothing that you can or can’t do that’s going to separate you from God’s love and grace and forgiveness.”

She pointed to the crucifixion as the reason.

“That’s why Jesus came and died on the cross because he already knew everything you were going to do,” she said.

The 6-foot-1 guard then explained what she believes comes after salvation.

She said “educating yourself” and reading the Bible are important.

But she added that all of that hinges on knowing “you’re already forgiven.”

Cunningham said she feels most connected to God when she is “prayed up.”

Von asked why she relies on her faith.

She said it is because of what she does for a living.

“You get a lot of hate, you get a lot of praise,” she said.

Faith, she said, keeps her stable and keeps her “who I am.”

She added that she does not care what people’s opinions are about her.

“Because I’m not living for their praise,” she said.

The conversation then turned to whether the media is unfair to Christians.

Cunningham said she loves seeing believers stand up for their faith.

“I feel like there’s a revival happening,” she said.

She acknowledged that it can be scary to speak up.

People have had bad experiences with church, she said.

But she said she likes seeing athletes with big platforms be “bold and courageous and come out about Jesus.”

Cunningham did not mention any specific athletes or incidents.

She did not address the transgender controversy that has surrounded her name in recent months.

She did not discuss politics or the WNBA’s three-point contest selections.

She stayed on one topic throughout the exchange: faith.

The interview was recorded and released by Von’s podcast team.

Cunningham is known primarily for her basketball career.

She was selected in the second round of the 2019 WNBA Draft out of Missouri.

She has played for the Indiana Fever since entering the league.

In the 2025 season, she averaged 7.9 points, 2.3 rebounds and 1.2 assists in 43 games off the bench.

She won the 2025 WNBA Commissioner’s Cup with the Fever.

Off the court, she has built a growing portfolio of brand deals.

She has endorsement agreements with Adidas, Arby’s, Marriott Bonvoy and European Wax Center.

In August 2025, she signed a multi-platform endorsement and investment agreement with Once Upon a Coconut.

She recently promoted the company’s new Coconut Water + Fruit Punch flavor on her Instagram story.

But on Von’s podcast, none of that came up.

The episode has drawn attention because of the contrast between Cunningham’s public persona and the content of the interview.

She has been at the center of multiple online controversies.

She has called out men who think they can beat WNBA players in one-on-one games.

She has criticized the WNBA over its three-point contest selections, calling them “clearly so political.”

She has called her critics “psychotic” and said there is “so much hatred in their heart.”

She has also been pulled into political conversations over her views on women’s sports.

In an interview with ESPN, she said her political beliefs are “very much in the middle.”

She said people often make assumptions about her based on headlines.

She said she wants to protect girls in sports but insisted that does not mean she hates transgender people.

Her social media following has grown explosively during the WNBA’s transgender controversy.

According to the New York Post, her numbers reached record-breaking levels.

MARCA reported that no one benefited more from the controversy in terms of growth.

Yet on this podcast, Cunningham did not engage with any of that.

She did not mention the controversy by name.

She did not defend or explain her past statements.

She simply talked about God’s love and the importance of faith.

Von, a comedian and podcast host known for his conversational style, let her lead the discussion.
