Stephen A. Smith names one NFL team even worse than the Cowboys

Stephen A. Smith just named one NFL team he thinks is even worse than the Dallas Cowboys.
He did it on ESPN.
And he did not hold back.
Smith has never been shy about piling on the Cowboys.
Back in October, after Dallas lost to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, he posted a video of himself laughing.
“You can’t make it up, you just can’t,” Smith said in that video.
“How about them Cowboys? Christmas always comes early with these dudes. They never let me down.”
More recently, he tore into the Cowboys defense after owner Jerry Jones claimed it was “trending in the right direction.”
Smith called the Dallas defense “horrible.”
The Cowboys are 3-5 this season.
They sit second in the NFC East.
But Smith says there is one team that is worse.
“I don’t give a d*** how bad the Dallas Cowboys are,” Smith said on ESPN.
“They ain’t worse than the Indianapolis Colts.”
He did not stop there.
“Let’s get that out of the way,” Smith continued.
“The Indianapolis Colts are a mess. They’ve been a mess.”
Smith then turned his attention to head coach Shane Steichen.
“Steichen’s lucky to still have his job,” Smith said.
“I mean, Ballard’s already gone. I’m surprised he wasn’t pushed out the door with him.”
General manager Chris Ballard was fired earlier this season.
Smith then brought up star running back Jonathan Taylor.
“I’m looking at the Indianapolis Colts right now, and that’s why Jonathan Taylor is on the market,” Smith said.
“You’re wondering where he’s going to land because we know that the Indianapolis Colts are going nowhere fast.”
Taylor is widely expected to be traded before the deadline.

Smith made clear just how low he thinks the Colts have sunk.
“Anybody can beat them,” he said.
“Anybody can beat them, including the chaos, the dysfunctional bunch that is the Dallas Cowboys, with the worst third-down defense, the worst run defense, the worst total defense and just a horrible defense overall.”
Then came the punchline.
“The Dallas Cowboys can still beat the Indianapolis Colts.”
The Colts are 2-6 this season.
They sit third in the AFC South.
Only the 1-7 Tennessee Titans are below them in the division.
The two teams face each other this Sunday.
Dallas travels to Indianapolis for the Week 10 matchup.
Smith’s comments come as both franchises struggle through disappointing seasons.
The Cowboys entered the year with playoff expectations.
Instead, they have one of the worst defenses in the league.
Dallas ranks dead last in total defense.
They also rank last against the run and last on third down.
The Colts, meanwhile, have lost four straight games.
Their offense has scored 20 or fewer points in five of eight games.
Taylor has been limited by both the team’s struggles and trade speculation.
Smith’s criticism of the Colts goes beyond the record.
He pointed to the front office and coaching staff as the root of the problem.
Ballard’s firing in October sent shockwaves through the organization.
Steichen, in his second season as head coach, now faces questions about his own future.
The Colts have not made the playoffs since 2020.
They have not won a playoff game since 2018.
Smith’s broader point is that the Colts lack direction.

He sees a team that is neither rebuilding nor competing.
That is the worst place to be in the NFL, he argued.
Sunday’s game will be a chance for one of these teams to prove Smith wrong.
Or to prove him right.
If the Cowboys lose to the Colts, Smith’s argument collapses.
If the Colts lose, it only confirms what he said.
Smith has made a career out of bold takes.
This one is backed by the standings and the eye test.
The Colts are 2-6.
The Cowboys are 3-5.
Both teams are fighting to stay relevant in November.
One of them, according to Smith, is already finished.
He made that clear when he talked about Taylor.
“That’s why Jonathan Taylor is on the market,” Smith said.
“You’re wondering where he’s going to land because we know that the Indianapolis Colts are going nowhere fast.”
The trade deadline is November 4.
Taylor is expected to be one of the biggest names moved.
Several contenders are reportedly interested.
For Colts fans, it is another sign of a franchise in freefall.
Smith’s comments are the latest in a long line of criticisms aimed at the Colts.
But coming from him, they carry extra weight.
Smith is one of the most visible voices in sports media.
When he calls a team a “mess,” people listen.
He did not mince words about the Cowboys either.
But he made a clear distinction.

The Cowboys are bad, he said.
The Colts are worse.
And he is not alone in that opinion.
NFL analysts have pointed to the Colts’ lack of identity all season.
The team has started three different quarterbacks.
Anthony Richardson was benched, then re-inserted as starter.
Joe Flacco filled in but could not stabilize the offense.
The defense has allowed 25 or more points in five games.
Special teams have been inconsistent.
It adds up to a team that looks lost.
Smith’s take is simple: the Colts are the worst team in the league right now.
Not the 1-7 Panthers.
Not the 1-7 Titans.
Not the 2-6 Patriots.
The Colts.
Sunday will tell us if he is right.
The Cowboys have their own problems.
But Smith thinks they have one thing the Colts do not.
A chance.
“The Dallas Cowboys can still beat the Indianapolis Colts,” he said.
That is not exactly a ringing endorsement of Dallas.
It is more of an indictment of Indianapolis.
For Colts fans, it is a low point.
For Smith, it is just another day at work.
He will be watching on Sunday.
And if the Colts lose, he will be ready to say “I told you so.”
