Triple H made a last-minute swap for the NXT Women's title match.

Triple H approached Paige at the last minute to replace the original challenger for the NXT Women’s Championship.

Paige returned to WWE NXT on the November 4, 2026 episode, nearly 12 years after her last match on the brand.

She faced Kelani Jordan for the NXT Women’s Championship.

However, Paige disclosed that she was not the first choice as challenger.

On Busted Open Radio, Paige revealed that Triple H requested her to make an NXT appearance during SmackDown’s taping following Raw.

She noted not being the initially scheduled contender but did not state who was originally planned for the title match.

“I got called last minute,” Paige said on the show.

“It wasn’t actually supposed to be me.”

“Triple H pulled me aside in Brooklyn at the double taping and said, ‘Do you mind going down to NXT?’”

“I was like, ‘Oh sh*t. Yeah, definitely.’”

Paige admitted the unexpected opportunity left her with little time to prepare for the championship match.

“It didn’t give me much time to prepare,” she said.

“Maybe if I prepared a little bit more, I would’ve won.”

“It is what it is. I know what to do next time if I get a little bit of time.”

The match ultimately saw Jordan retain her title.

Paige, who became the inaugural NXT Women’s Champion in June 2013, came up short in her return after Jordan countered her Rampaige finishing maneuver into a pinfall to secure the victory.

Paige was forced to relinquish the NXT Women’s Championship after she transitioned to the WWE main roster and won the Divas Championship a year later.

During her appearance on Busted Open Radio, Paige also said the nerves for this match hit harder than they did at WrestleMania 42.

“It’s been over 12 years since I’ve been home and in an NXT ring, and it’s just, man, I had chills,” she said.

“I had chills. Before I went out there, I was really, really nervous, and it was the most nervous I’ve been since I came back, even more nervous than Mania.”

“I’m like, ‘This is where I started. This is my home, and I hope I do a good job for the home crowd.’”

“And I wanted to do a good job for Kelani, too.”

“And yeah, I feel like we did together. We made a masterpiece there, at least to me.”

The November 4 edition of NXT also featured special appearances by Cody Rhodes and John Cena.

Cena announced Zilla Fatu’s addition to the John Cena Classic.

Triple H, whose real name is Paul Levesque, serves as WWE’s Chief Content Officer.

He has overseen NXT’s creative direction since its rebranding as NXT 2.0 and later the current NXT era.

His reputation for last-minute changes and personal outreach to talent is well-documented within the industry.

Paige, born Saraya-Jade Bevis, was the first-ever NXT Women’s Champion when the title was introduced in 2013.

She was forced to vacate the championship after moving to the main roster later that year.

Paige went on to win the WWE Divas Championship twice.

Her in-ring career was cut short in 2018 due to a neck injury, leading to her retirement from active competition.

She returned to WWE in 2022 as the general manager of SmackDown before stepping away from that role.

Her appearance on the November 4 NXT marked her first match on the brand since 2014.

Kelani Jordan, the reigning NXT Women’s Champion, has held the title since September 2026.

Jordan’s championship reign has been defined by defenses against multiple challengers from both NXT and the main roster.

The identity of the originally scheduled challenger remains unknown.

Paige did not disclose the name during her interview, and WWE has not publicly commented on the change.

Triple H has not addressed the last-minute swap in any media appearance as of this writing.

The decision to bring in Paige as a replacement drew significant attention from fans and media outlets.

Several wrestling news sites, including F4W/WON, Wrestling Headlines, and SEScoops, reported on the last-minute nature of the booking.

SEScoops noted that Paige was reported to be in Orlando ahead of Wednesday’s NXT, and she turned out to be Jordan’s mystery challenger.

Wrestling Headlines described the appearance as a surprise return that was not part of the company’s original plans.

Paige’s match against Jordan was promoted as a mystery challenger segment during the broadcast.

The crowd reaction to her entrance was overwhelmingly positive, with fans chanting her name throughout the match.

Social media reaction to the appearance was mixed, with some fans celebrating her return and others questioning the booking decision.

Paige’s statement that she was more nervous for this match than for WrestleMania 42 highlights the emotional weight of the moment.

WrestleMania 42 took place in April 2025 at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California.

Paige competed in a multi-woman match at that event, marking one of her first high-profile matches since her return.

The NXT Women’s Championship has a lineage dating back to 2013.
