Wemby’s 52-point night exposes the Mavs’ biggest weakness

Victor Wembanyama draws Wilt comparison after 52-point game.
Victor Wembanyama owned the brightest spotlight on a phenomenal NBA night filled with historic performances.
Nikola Jokic recorded a 30-point triple-double, his 90th in just three quarters, setting an all-time record.
Luka Doncic poured in another 40-point outing to surpass Michael Jordan for the best scoring start to a season.
Klay Thompson turned back the clock with 30 points, eight threes and a game-winner.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander once again went over 40 against the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Yet none of them managed to steal the night from Wemby.
The San Antonio Spurs center dominated the Dallas Mavericks on home court in a 112-111 victory.
He finished with 52 points, 24 rebounds, eight blocks, two assists and two steals with just one turnover.
He shot 16-of-28 from the field and 19-of-23 from the free-throw line, including the game-winning free throw.
It was the first stat line of its kind in the NBA since Bob McAdoo in 1974.
Even so, after posting video game numbers, Wemby invited comparisons to only one man: Wilt Chamberlain.
“He basically Wilt,” said his teammate Dylan Harper after the win that pushed the Spurs to a 6-2 record.
Harper backed that historic comparison after watching Wembanyama overwhelm Cooper Flagg.
Flagg experienced a sudden reality check.
Although the Mavs are not considered contenders this season, this duel drew by far the most attention in the league last night simply because the floor was shared by Wembanyama and Cooper Flagg.
Flagg is the young star whom many project to challenge the Frenchman one day as the league’s future face.
However, after a phenomenal start to the season, the 19-year-old star experienced a sharp reality check.
He ended the night with 19 points, 10 rebounds, five assists, and just one turnover.
But he shot a rough 7-of-19 from the field and 0-of-3 from deep after starting the game 1-11.
Far from bad statistics, it was simply below the standard he has accustomed us to and far beneath what Wembanyama offered fans last night.
Even Wemby struggled from beyond the arc, hitting just 1-of-8 from deep.
But in every other facet of the game, he dominated the U.S. sensation in Wilt-like fashion.
Wemby sent a clear message to the rest of the league.
He blocked Coop twice and scored an AND-1 right over him in crucial moments.
This showed that right now he holds a few years of experience over the player many consider the future face of U.S. basketball.
In a matchup where Harper was also stellar, chipping in 21 points and five rebounds on 9-of-15 shooting while going toe-to-toe with the Mavericks.
Victor Wembanyama is the alien, and on Wednesday night he achieved something that hasn’t been accomplished since shortly after Area 51 was opened.
An unreal night from The Alien.
Wemby went off to a level we haven’t seen in decades against the Mavericks, finishing with 52 points, 24 rebounds, and 8 blocks.
He became the first player to hit these marks since Wilt Chamberlain in 1961.
It goes without saying: everything about this highlight reel shows how unfair the game is.
Obviously we’ve known about his length, wingspan, and athleticism since he was touted upon entering the NBA.
But the edge he’s added to his game that pushes it into the stratosphere is the amount of poise he’s showing on the defensive end when it comes to blocking shots.
Wemby has developed this technique of hanging on an opponent’s hip and waiting for them to rise for their shot well before he ever jumps.
This ensures the shooter’s attempt isn’t altered, as it might be if they jumped at the same time.
Wembanyama knows he can easily match them at the point of release because of his length.
It’s what led to a majority of his blocks on Wednesday.
It’s frankly just unfair.
It’s Wemby’s world, and we’re living in it.
Sometimes you look at a Victor Wembanyama stat line and you have to do a double take.
After doing just that while observing Wednesday's astonishing 52-point, 24-rebound performance in a win over the Dallas Mavericks, we had to rub our eyes and make sure it was all real.
The San Antonio Spurs' All-Star not only dropped 52 points and 24 rebounds.
He also added two assists, two steals and EIGHT blocks for good measure.
He scored 110 points in Yahoo High Score fantasy basketball, while putting up even more in points leagues (112.8).
The 110 points in High Score is tied for the most in the format ever.
It matches Bam Adebayo's 83-point game from last season against the Wizards.
At the time, we thought we'd be talking about Bam's performance likely for the rest of time.
Well, guess we need to add Wemby's box score from last night into that category.
And the cherry on top of the fantasy basketball sundae might be that Wembanyama iced the game with a free throw to give the Spurs a 112-111 lead.
That would help them hold on for the win.
The 52 points vaulted the big man's season average up to 29 points per game.
That now ranks fourth in the NBA entering play Thursday.
San Antonio has now won six games in a row after dropping the first two contests of the season.
Wemby will look to continue his massive fantasy week with matchups against the Kings and Trail Blazers.
For High Score formats, it'll be tough — actually nearly impossible — for Wemby to top that score for managers this week.
But those in points and 9-category leagues will welcome the chance at additional production.
This monster night exposed exactly who the Mavericks are missing.
With a 6-2 record, the Spurs are surging, and Wembanyama is playing like a man on a mission.
The question now is whether any team in the league can stop him.
