Alex Eala’s Next Opponent Set After Stunning Win in Hong Kong

Alex Eala’s Next Opponent Set After Stunning Win in Hong Kong

Alex Eala finally found a way past Tereza Valentova.

Now, the Filipina tennis star has another opportunity to extend her remarkable season.

Eala advanced to the quarterfinals of the Hong Kong Open on Thursday after defeating Valentova, 6-4, 7-6 (9-7), in a gripping second-round match at Victoria Park.

The victory ended a two-match losing streak against the Czech teenager.

It sent Eala into the last eight of the WTA 250 tournament.

Next up for the second-seeded Filipina is Croatia's Antonia Ruzic.

Ruzic eliminated China's Wang Xinyu to secure her quarterfinal berth.

The two will meet Friday, November 6, with a place in the semifinals at stake.

Eala, ranked a career-high No. 17 in the world, enters the quarterfinal as the higher-ranked player against No. 81 Ruzic.

However, the Croatian has already demonstrated her ability to overcome more established opponents.

Ruzic defeated sixth-seeded Wang, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2, in Thursday's second-round encounter.

The result set up the first career meeting between Eala and Ruzic.

For Eala, the challenge will be maintaining her composure after surviving a demanding encounter against a player who had previously caused her considerable problems.

She had lost both previous meetings with Valentova in straight sets, falling in Osaka last October and Doha in February.

This time, Eala refused to let another opportunity slip away.

Eala appeared headed toward a comfortable victory after racing to a 3-0 lead in the opening set.

Valentova fought back to level the score at 4-4 before Eala held serve and broke the Czech teenager to take the set.

The second set brought another test.

Valentova established a 5-3 advantage and threatened to force a deciding set, but Eala battled back to reach a tiebreak.

The Filipina surged ahead 5-0, only for Valentova to save three match points and level the score at 7-7.

Eala eventually closed out the contest on her fourth match point after one hour and 54 minutes.

"It was so tough, really, really tough," Eala said during her on-court interview.

She acknowledged Valentova's performance and admitted the match could easily have gone the other way.

"I'm really happy with that win. I think I escaped by a little bit," Eala said.

The victory improved her career record against Valentova to 1-2.

In her post-match press conference, Eala admitted she had to dig deep to grind through long, grueling rallies and a tense second-set tiebreak.

The 21-year-old said she came prepared, applying lessons learned from her previous two encounters with Valentova.

"You don't go into battle without a plan. Of course, the previous two meetings were super difficult, so I knew it was going to be a tough battle. I just tried to be better than the previous time that we met," said Eala.

Fans online cheered that Eala's breakthrough victory proved that "third time's the charm," echoing their head-to-head history where Eala had dropped both prior meetings in Osaka and Doha.

But Eala offered a different perspective.

"I don't necessarily think that it's because it's the third time. But I really tried to stay present, and it was proven very difficult, as you could all see," she said.

Refining her approach for the third clash, Eala noted that "there were things that I deliberately tried to do differently tonight."

Ultimately, the World No. 17 emphasized that mental fortitude was the deciding factor in securing the hard-fought win.

"That's everyone's goal… to try to improve every time they step onto court, right? I really did try to stay present, but it proved to be a little difficult. But I got through, and I think mental fortitude was the key in today's match for me," said Eala.

Eala and Valentova delivered a memorable contest, continually trading momentum back and forth in a fierce tug-of-war while earning and saving match points during the second-set tiebreak.

"I really had to fight through, especially with the chances that I had in the second set and to close out the match. So it took a lot of mental strength to do that, to be in the match, and to stay in the present. I'm really happy about it," she said.

Centre Court was packed with a vibrant crowd of Filipino supporters who cheered passionately for Eala throughout the November 5 match.

That same thunderous backing is expected on Friday, November 6, as Eala takes on Croatia's Antonia Ruzic in the tournament quarterfinals.

If Eala defeats Ruzic, she will advance to Saturday's semifinals.

Eala has also revealed that she is still trying to improve her game at the net, admitting that this is one of the areas where she believes she can become a better player.

The 21-year-old Filipina has enjoyed a successful 2026 season, but she is aware that there are several things she needs to work on.

The world No. 17 recently spoke to reporters during the Hong Kong Open, where she is competing in her final tournament of the season.

Eala has made a lot of progress over the past year, reaching a career-high ranking and winning some of the biggest matches of her young career.

However, the Filipino star does not believe that she has reached her full potential.

During a press conference, she was asked about the improvements in her volleys and net play, which have become more noticeable during recent tournaments.

Eala admitted that this part of her game remains a work in progress, although she is quite happy with how useful it has become during the current season.

"I think I still have room for improvement, although it's been very useful this year," Eala explained.

The young player has mostly relied on her groundstrokes and movement during her rise through the WTA rankings.

The left-hander is known for her ability to hit the ball from the baseline, but becoming more comfortable at the net could give her additional options against experienced opponents.

Her latest comments followed a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Australian teenager Emerson Jones in the opening round of the Hong Kong Open.

Eala had originally been scheduled to face Alycia Parks, but the American withdrew because of a shoulder injury.

The 18-year-old Jones entered the main draw as a lucky loser and caused some problems for the second seed, who nevertheless completed the victory in one hour and 23 minutes.

Eala's coach, Joan Bosch, recently discussed the young player's development and explained that there is not only one particular area where she needs to improve.
