Arthur Fils reaches ATP Finals but lands on unwanted list

Arthur Fils has qualified for the ATP Finals for the first time in his career in 2026.

Fils has enjoyed a breakthrough season this year, winning two ATP titles including his first Masters tournament at the Cincinnati Open.

This has enabled Fils to break into the top 10 for the first time in his career.

He has now officially qualified for the ATP Finals, becoming the first French player to do so since the now-retired Gael Monfils in 2016.

Despite Fils’ impressive achievement, he has actually now joined an unwanted list after qualifying for the ATP Finals this year.

Arthur Fils has only won one Grand Slam match in 2026 despite qualifying for the ATP Finals.

Fils returned to the ATP Tour in February after playing just two matches in nine months following a period on the sidelines due to a stress fracture in his lower back.

Since then, Fils has won 41 of his 56 matches, reaching three finals this year.

He has been particularly successful at Masters 1000 tournaments, having won the Cincinnati Open and reached the semi-finals of both the Miami Open and the Madrid Open.

Despite his success at Masters 1000 tournaments, Fils was unable to translate this to the Grand Slam tournaments.

Fils missed both the Australian Open and Roland Garros through injury.

He was only able to win one match across both Wimbledon and the US Open, where he lost to former Grand Slam finalists Matteo Berrettini and Stefanos Tsitsipas, respectively.

As a result, Fils has become just the second player in history to have qualified for the ATP Finals in the same year that they have won less than two Grand Slam matches.

Fils joins American player Brad Gilbert on this list, who did not win a single Grand Slam match in 1989.

Like Fils, Gilbert also missed the Australian Open and Roland Garros that year, before losing in the first round of Wimbledon and the US Open.

Gilbert found success outside of the majors after winning five ATP titles in 1989, including the Cincinnati Open like Fils.

Fils has now booked his spot into the ATP Finals just like Gilbert did in 1989, but he will be hoping for a better outcome at this year’s tournament in Turin.

Gilbert did not make it past the round-robin stage at the 1989 ATP Finals, which were held in New York, having won only one of the three matches he played.

Gilbert lost to both eventual champion Stefan Edberg and runner-up Boris Becker.

Fils himself is feeling highly motivated at the Paris Masters for two main reasons.

He has officially secured his place at the Nitto ATP Finals, helped in part by his rivals’ setbacks.

He is also competing on home soil again after a lengthy absence.

“It had been a year and a half since I last played at home, and I missed it,” the Frenchman admitted after defeating Czech player Tomas Machac.

His most recent tournament in France had been the 2025 French Open, where he suffered a stress fracture in his back.

Fils is embracing every aspect of playing in front of a home crowd.

“It’s the first time this year that I’ve walked onto court without headphones, just to take in the atmosphere,” he said.

“I feel incredible, honestly. What I’m experiencing right now is pure happiness.”

Fils secured his first ATP Finals qualification after beating Tomas Machac 6-3, 7-6(4) at the Paris Masters.

He described the achievement as a childhood dream come true.

Fils qualified for the 2026 ATP Finals in Turin after a big day at the Paris Masters.

He secured his place after fellow Frenchman Quentin Halys defeated Frances Tiafoe.

Fils celebrated by beating Czech player Tomas Machac 6-3, 7-6(4) in front of his home fans.

The 22-year-old will now face American Taylor Fritz in the next round of 16.

After this win, Fils spoke about how his childhood dream of playing at the ATP Finals finally came true.

He also mentioned the warm support he received from the crowd and how excited he is to compete in Turin.

Fils was following Halys’s match closely because its result could decide his qualification.

When Halys won, Fils knew he had earned enough points to reach the ATP Finals.

He thanked his fellow Frenchman for helping make the moment possible.

“It’s a day I won’t forget. I followed Quentin’s match closely, I have to thank him for his win, which allowed me to relax a bit for tonight,” Fils told TennisActu.

The young Frenchman was delighted to achieve something he had dreamed about since childhood.

The ATP Finals bring together the eight leading singles players of the season, giving Fils the chance to compete against the best names in men’s tennis.

“It’s a childhood dream, I’m very happy to take part this year and I hope I can play it more often, almost every year. I just want to enjoy it,” he said.

Fils has enjoyed a big season, including winning his first Masters 1000 title in Cincinnati.

His qualification is another important step in his rise.
