Charles Barkley’s blunt take on Wemby’s unreal game says it all

Charles Barkley’s blunt take on Wemby’s unreal game says it all

Charles Barkley's reaction to Wemby's unreal performance says everything you need to know.

During Wednesday night's NBA game between the Dallas Mavericks and San Antonio Spurs, fans realized in less than one half that they were in for a special night with Victor Wembanyama.

In fact, his halftime stats alone would have been enough to earn a tip of the cap from around the league.

But after scoring 29 points and pulling down 15 rebounds in the first two quarters, Wemby's second-half performance proved just as special.

Yet at halftime, Charles Barkley admitted he was basically left speechless by Wemby's performance in the first two quarters.

When ESPN's halftime show got underway, Barkley kicked things off with a perfect response that summed up how dominant the Spurs star had been, revealing he was given the task of covering Wemby's early performance.

"What the hell am I supposed to say?" Barkley said.

"America, I wish I could just make up something to sound smart; just look at this stuff."

"This is just ridiculous, man, I mean it is flat-out amazing."

Barkley (along with the rest of the crew) then essentially watched the highlights and reacted pretty much as all NBA fans did.

The wildest part of Barkley's candid reaction to Wembanyama's performance was that it was only two quarters, which can't be overstated.

However, as mentioned, Wemby's performance amid the Mavericks' second-half push to try to steal a victory remained dominant and extremely impressive.

Wemby finished the night with 52 points on 16-of-28 shooting (57.1%) while pulling down 24 rebounds, blocking eight shots and adding two steals and two assists.

It was the type of out-of-this-world performance that earned him the nickname "The Alien" and (again) showed how dominant the 22-year-old can be on the floor.

The performance came during a nationally televised game on ESPN, giving millions of viewers a prime-time showcase of Wembanyama's unique skill set.

At 7-foot-4 with a reported 8-foot wingspan, the French phenom has drawn comparisons to legends like Kareem Abdul-Jabbar for his scoring touch and Bill Russell for his shot-blocking presence.

Wednesday's stat line — 52 points, 24 rebounds, 8 blocks — has only been achieved a handful of times in NBA history.

Wilt Chamberlain did it multiple times in the 1960s.

Elgin Baylor did it once.

Michael Jordan never did it.

LeBron James never did it.

Shaquille O'Neal never did it.

The last player to come close was Anthony Davis in 2016, when he scored 59 points with 20 rebounds, though he had only one block that night.

Wembanyama's eight blocks tied his career high and underscored why he won Defensive Player of the Year as a rookie in 2024.

The Spurs selected Wembanyama with the first overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft after a year of intense anticipation, with some scouts calling him the best prospect since LeBron James in 2003.

He averaged 21.4 points, 10.6 rebounds and 3.6 blocks as a rookie, winning Rookie of the Year unanimously.

In his sophomore season, those numbers climbed to 25.7 points, 12.2 rebounds and 4.1 blocks per game.

Wednesday's explosion against Dallas pushed his season averages even higher and strengthened his case for a second consecutive Defensive Player of the Year award.

The Mavericks entered the game with one of the league's top offenses, led by Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving, but had no answer for Wembanyama on either end of the floor.

Doncic finished with 31 points and 10 assists, but the Spurs' defense — anchored by Wembanyama — held Dallas to 42 percent shooting from the field.

Barkley's reaction on the set of "Inside the NBA" captured what many around the league were feeling: there is no precedent for a player this tall doing the things Wembanyama does.

"I wish I could just make up something to sound smart," Barkley said, acknowledging that no analysis could do justice to what viewers had just watched.

The moment was notable because Barkley is rarely at a loss for words.

Known for his unfiltered commentary and willingness to criticize even the game's biggest stars, the Hall of Famer and TNT analyst has built a second career on his sharp tongue and quick wit.
