Crystal Palace Appeal Rejected Over Mateta Red Card Against Spurs

Crystal Palace boss Pierre Sage expects Axel Disasi to be available for the weekend after the defender missed the Hoffenheim Europa League draw due to what Sage described as an “internal decision.”
Disasi was not involved in Palace’s 1-1 draw against Hoffenheim on Thursday night at Selhurst Park.
Sage declined to elaborate on the reason behind his omission.
“It’s an internal decision,” Sage said.
“I don’t want to comment more.
“Sorry for that because you know I always reply but I don’t want to comment.”
Asked whether Disasi would be available for the weekend, Sage told TNT Sports: “For the weekend, yes.”
The news comes as Palace also learned that their appeal over Jean-Philippe Mateta’s red card against Tottenham Hotspur has been rejected.
The FA upheld the decision, meaning Mateta will serve a suspension.
Mateta was sent off during the Premier League match against Spurs for a challenge deemed dangerous by the referee.
Palace argued the decision was harsh and submitted an appeal to the Football Association.
The FA’s appeal board reviewed the incident and concluded that the original red card was correct.
Palace now face the prospect of being without Mateta for upcoming fixtures.
The club has not issued a formal statement beyond confirming the appeal outcome.
Mateta has been a key figure in Palace’s attack this season.
His absence leaves Sage with fewer options up front heading into a busy stretch of games.
The timing is particularly difficult with Liverpool visiting Selhurst Park on Sunday.
Liverpool are currently near the top of the Premier League table.
Palace will need to find goals from elsewhere if Mateta is unavailable.
Sage was also asked about the team’s performance against Hoffenheim after the match.
Daichi Kamada scored a stoppage-time equalizer to salvage a 1-1 draw for 10-man Palace.
Adam Wharton was sent off in the 77th minute for a second bookable offense.
Hoffenheim had taken the lead in the seventh minute through Alexander Prass.
Prass’s half-volley squirmed under goalkeeper Dean Henderson and crossed the line.
Henderson made several important saves to keep Palace in the game.
Kamada’s late strike came after a goalmouth scramble in added time.
Sage was pleased with the character shown by his side to earn a point.
“I think it could be better if we scored before but I know Dean Henderson also kept us in the game with his saves,” Sage said.
“I like the energy of the team and to never give up until the end, the last minute.”
Sage also offered a critical assessment of the team’s tactical performance.
“Offensively we did better than our two previous games but we have to continue to improve defensively,” he said.
“We gave up too much space to the opponent and sometimes we had difficulty in duels.
“When we try to attack a little bit we are very quickly open.”
Palace currently sit in 20th place in the Europa League league phase after four matches.
The team has work to do in the competition to advance to the knockout stages.
In the Premier League, Palace have also struggled for consistency this season.
The Europa League draw against Hoffenheim offered no respite from their league travails.
Hoffenheim are a side currently in the bottom half of the Bundesliga.
Palace were outplayed for large stretches of the match.

Hoffenheim created the best chances in the game without ever having to try too hard.
Palace were in the match throughout without ever dominating.
The home crowd at Selhurst Park remained supportive despite the team’s struggles.
Wharton gave possession away cheaply about 20 yards from the Hoffenheim goal in the build-up to the opener.
There were perhaps just three touches before the ball reached Tim Lemperle wide right.
Lemperle whipped the ball first time to the advancing Prass.
Prass’s shot was immediate and caught Henderson cold.
Henderson’s save was too slow, and the ball squirmed through his midriff before rolling over the line.
Andrej Kramaric came close to doubling Hoffenheim’s lead with a volley in the 23rd minute.
Henderson made a fine one-handed save to deny Kramaric.
Palace started to work their way into the game after that.
Fisnik Asllani fired wide early in the second half as Hoffenheim continued to cause problems on the counter-attack.
Kamada had an early goal ruled out for the hosts before Hoffenheim took the lead.
The Japan international was persistent throughout the match.
His stoppage-time equalizer generated a rare moment of elation at Selhurst Park this season.
After the match, Sage struggled to put a positive gloss on events.
Asked if he thought his team had deserved their point, he said it “depended on the moment of the game.”
He had praise for his side’s attitude but was critical of their tactical performance.
To be fair to Sage, his assessment was accurate based on what unfolded on the pitch.
Palace set off with intensity but were sloppy and coughed up an easy opening goal early.
The match was played on Bonfire Night with a tea-time kick-off.
A family-friendly crowd might have had a right to expect fireworks.
Instead, they saw a team that had to fight until the final seconds to avoid defeat.
The Europa League format this season places 36 teams in a single league phase.
Each team plays eight matches against eight different opponents.
The top eight teams advance directly to the round of 16.
Teams finishing 9th to 24th enter a playoff round.
Palace currently sit in 20th position with four points from four matches.
The club has work to do in the remaining four fixtures to secure a playoff spot.
Disasi’s availability for the weekend would provide a boost to the defense.
The defender joined Palace on loan from Chelsea earlier this season.
He has made several appearances for the club in both the Premier League and Europa League.
His absence against Hoffenheim was unexplained beyond Sage’s “internal decision” comment.
Such language typically indicates a disciplinary or personal matter that the club chooses not to disclose publicly.
It is common in football for managers to use the phrase “internal decision” when they wish to keep the details private.
Sage’s confirmation that Disasi would be available for the weekend suggests the issue has been resolved.
Liverpool’s visit on Sunday presents a significant challenge.
The Reds are one of the strongest sides in the Premier League this season.
Palace will need to be at their best to compete.

The absence of Mateta removes a key attacking threat.
Mateta has been involved in several goals this season.
His physical presence and finishing ability have been important for Palace.
Sage will need to find a way to replace that output.
Kamada’s late equalizer against Hoffenheim showed the team’s resilience.
Sage will hope that resilience carries over into the Premier League.
The appeal process for red cards in English football is handled by the FA.
Clubs can appeal if they believe the referee made a clear and obvious error.
An independent regulatory commission reviews the evidence.
If the appeal is rejected, the player serves the full suspension.
In some cases, the suspension can be extended if the appeal is deemed frivolous.
Palace’s appeal was rejected, meaning Mateta will serve the standard three-match ban for a straight red card.
The club accepted the decision and will move on.
Sage now faces the challenge of preparing his squad without Mateta and with the Disasi situation resolved.
The coming weeks will test the depth of Palace’s squad.
The transfer window does not open again until January.
Palace must work with the players currently available.
The Europa League campaign continues after the international break.

Relegation is a concern for teams near the bottom of the table.
Palace are not currently in the relegation zone but are not far from it.
Every point matters as the season progresses.
The draw against Hoffenheim was not ideal but kept Palace’s Europa League hopes alive.
Kamada’s goal was crucial in that regard.
The Japan international has experience in European competition from his time at Eintracht Frankfurt.
He won the Europa League with Frankfurt in 2022.
His experience showed in the composure he displayed to score in stoppage time.
Sage will rely on that experience as the season continues.
The manager is still relatively new to the role at Crystal Palace.
He took over earlier this season and is still implementing his ideas.
The team has shown signs of progress but also moments of fragility.
Consistency remains the biggest challenge.
The match against Liverpool will be a significant test of where Palace currently stand.
Liverpool’s attacking firepower will test Palace’s defense.
Henderson will need to be at his best in goal.
The goalkeeper has been one of Palace’s most consistent performers this season.

The team’s never-say-die attitude was also praised by the manager.
That attitude will be needed against Liverpool.

The Europa League and Premier League commitments will require rotation.

The international break will provide some respite for injured players.
Palace will hope to return from the break with a fully fit squad.
The appeal rejection is a setback, but the team must move on.
Mateta will serve his suspension and return for the next available match.
The club will continue to support the player during his absence.
Sage’s focus is now on the Liverpool match.
The manager will prepare his team as best he can.
The outcome of the appeal was expected by many observers.
Red card appeals in the Premier League are rarely successful.
The standard of proof required is high.
Clubs must show that the referee made an obvious error.
In this case, the FA decided the original decision was correct.
Palace will now plan without Mateta for the next three matches.
The club has not commented further on the decision.
Sage’s pre-match press conference on Friday will likely address the situation.
Journalists will ask about the appeal and the Disasi issue.
Sage has shown a willingness to be open about most topics.
The “internal decision” regarding Disasi was an exception.
Fans will be curious about what happened.
Sage’s refusal to comment suggests the matter is sensitive.
The club’s priority is maintaining focus on the pitch.
The Liverpool match is a chance to bounce back.
