Florida Gators name starting QB for Oklahoma showdown

Florida Gators showcase roster depth in season-opening win over Canes
But the bigger story this week is on the other side of the ball.
The Florida Gators have officially named a starting quarterback for Saturday’s massive SEC showdown against the Oklahoma Sooners.
Tramell Jones Jr. will get the nod, replacing incumbent starter Aaron Philo.
The decision was first reported by CBS Sports insider Matt Zenitz.
“Florida is currently expected to make a change at QB and to start sophomore Tramell Jones against Oklahoma on Saturday, sources tell @CBSSports,” Zenitz wrote.
Jones was a Class of 2025 four-star recruit.
He already has a signature win on his resume: a road upset over Texas on Oct. 17, when he started in place of an injured Philo.
This season, Jones has completed 70.8% of his passes for 579 yards and four touchdowns against three interceptions.
He has also rushed for 77 yards and one touchdown.
But the decision is not without risk.
Jones replaced Philo in last week’s 27-8 loss to Georgia.
He went 18-for-25 for 172 yards, one interception and one rushing touchdown.
Philo, meanwhile, was pulled after going 5-of-7 for 26 yards and two interceptions across three drives.
Philo has now lost his last three starts.

Head coach Jon Sumrall addressed the quarterback situation on Monday.
Sumrall said there “wouldn’t be some big quarterback one announcement” and that they “need both of them ready to go play.”
Still, the move became inevitable after the Georgia loss.
Florida is now 5-3 and ranked 24th in the College Football Playoff Poll.
The Gators are technically still in playoff contention, but there is zero margin for error.
One more loss likely ends their postseason hopes.
Sumrall emphasized that the issues go beyond the quarterback position.
“I don’t know if Tom Brady was our quarterback on Saturday if it would have helped us,” Sumrall said after the Georgia loss.
“And I’m not trying to be a smart aleck. He would have been under too much duress and pressure to operate.”
That comment underscores the offensive line struggles that have plagued the Gators all season.
Jones also carries a physical concern into the Oklahoma game.
Sumrall mentioned after the Georgia loss that Jones is currently dealing with an injury that could require surgery in the offseason.
Sumrall declined to offer specifics on the injury.
But it means Jones will be playing through pain in the most critical stretch of the season.
The timing of the switch is notable.

Oklahoma has also struggled offensively this season.
The Sooners just parted ways with their offensive coordinator.
That could create an opportunity for Florida’s defense to control the game.
But the Gators cannot afford another loss.
Florida’s remaining schedule includes games against Oklahoma, Vanderbilt, Florida State and a road trip to No. 6 Kentucky.
The Gators will likely be favorites in three of those games.
The Kentucky game offers a chance for a third top-10 win this season.
Defensive lineman Brendan Bett summed up the stakes.
“It's a huge difference going 5-7 versus 9-3,” Bett said.
“So, the goal is we have a lot more ball to play.”
Defensive lineman Emmanuel Oyebadejo praised how Philo has handled the situation.
“To see how he’s handled that whole situation has been great,” Oyebadejo said.
“I always say he’s like a true professional just handling that. Maybe he hasn’t always gotten the way. We all want to play. We all want to be impactful, but he’s handled that great. When he has come in, I feel like he has done what he’s supposed to, to the best of his ability.”
Philo’s professionalism has been noted, but the results on the field have not been there.
In his last three starts, Philo has struggled with turnovers and production.

Against Georgia, he threw two interceptions in just three drives.
That forced Sumrall to make the switch.
Jones has shown flashes of high-level play.
His performance against Texas was particularly impressive: 22-for-35, 155 yards and two touchdowns.
He led the Gators to a road win against a top-tier opponent.
But he also turned the ball over twice against Georgia, including an end-zone interception during a long-shot comeback attempt.
Sumrall has emphasized that the entire team needs to play better around the quarterback.
The offensive line has struggled to protect both Philo and Jones.
The running game has been inconsistent.
And the defense, while solid at times, has not been able to carry the team.
Still, the switch to Jones represents a decisive move by the coaching staff.
It signals that the Gators are all-in on the sophomore’s upside.
Jones brings mobility and arm talent that Philo could not consistently provide.
His ability to extend plays with his legs adds a dimension the offense has lacked.
But the injury concern looms.

If Jones aggravates his injury against Oklahoma, Florida could be forced back to Philo.
That would be a worst-case scenario for a team fighting for its playoff life.
The Oklahoma game is set for Saturday in Gainesville.
Kickoff time has not been announced yet.
The Sooners have their own offensive issues, but they remain a dangerous opponent.
Florida cannot afford to overlook anyone at this point.
The Gators are 5-3 and need to win out to have a realistic shot at the playoff.
Even at 9-3, there are no guarantees.
But the alternative — 5-7 — would be a devastating end to a season that started with promise.
Bett’s words capture the urgency: the difference between 5-7 and 9-3 is everything.
Jones now carries that weight on his shoulders.
He will be playing through pain, with a possible surgery waiting after the season.
But if he can replicate his Texas performance, the Gators might just salvage their season.
If not, the questions about Sumrall’s decision-making will only grow louder.
For now, Florida has made its choice.
Tramell Jones Jr. is the starter.
The Oklahoma game will be his audition for the rest of the season.
And the Gators’ playoff hopes ride on how he performs.
