Hwang Yoo-min fires 4-under to start Toto Japan Classic strong.

Hwang Yoo-min started the Toto Japan Classic on the LPGA Tour in a good mood.

Hwang Yu-min shot a 4-under 68 in the first round of the tournament at Daieiyo Club Minori Course in Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan on November 5, 2026.

She carded four birdies without a single bogey.

That clean round placed her in a tie for seventh place on the first day of the Toto Japan Classic, which is the last event of the LPGA's Asian swing.

She sits two strokes behind the co-leaders: Miyu Yamashita, Akie Iwai, and Sayaka Takahashi, all of Japan, who each shot 6-under 66.

Hwang Yoo-min is not new to winning on the LPGA Tour.

She won the Lotte Championship last year as an invited player.

That victory gave her full LPGA membership and a taste of what it takes to close out a tournament.

This season, she has been consistent.

She has landed in the top 25 eight times so far in 2026.

Her best finish before this week is a tie for fifth place at the Hilton Grand Bases Tournament of Champions.

Now she is aiming for her second LPGA Tour title.

But the bigger prize may be the Louise Suggs Rolex Rookie of the Year award.

That award can only be won once in a player's career.

Hwang Yoo-min currently sits in second place in the Rookie of the Year standings with 441 points.

She trails Erika Hara of Japan, who leads with 559 points.

The gap between them is 118 points.

With only three tournaments left on the 2026 LPGA schedule, every event matters.

The Toto Japan Classic carries 150 points for the winner.

That means a victory here could nearly erase the deficit and put Hwang in the driver's seat for the final two events.

Hara, her direct rival, also played in the first round.

Hara shot a 2-under 70.

Her round was less steady than Hwang's: she mixed five birdies with three bogeys.

That leaves Hara tied for 26th place after day one.

Hwang has a two-stroke advantage over Hara after 18 holes.

Several other South Korean players also turned in solid first rounds.

Jeon In-ji and Kang Min-ji each shot 3-under 69.

They are tied for 16th place.

Lee Mi-hyang and Joo Soo-bin both shot 2-under 70.

They are tied for 26th place alongside Hara.

Kim Hyo-joo, who is seeking her third win of the 2026 season, finished the day at 1-under 71.

She is tied for 40th place.

The Toto Japan Classic is being played at the Taiheiyo Club Minori Course, which measures 6,598 yards.

Defending champion Nasa Hataoka opened with a 68 and is tied for seventh alongside Hwang Yoo-min and several others.

Hwang Yoo-min fires 4-under to start Toto Japan Classic strong.

Hataoka is trying to become the first back-to-back winner of this event since the tournament joined the LPGA schedule.

The co-leaders all fired 66.

Miyu Yamashita is coming off a win at the Maybank Championship in Malaysia just last weekend.

Akie Iwai finished tied for second at the Walmart NW Arkansas Championship in late September.

Sayaka Takahashi is seeking her first LPGA win.

One stroke behind them at 67 are Minami Hiruta, Pajaree Anannarukarn of Thailand, and Fuka Suga.

The tournament is the final stop of the LPGA's late-season Asian swing, which included events in South Korea, Malaysia, and Thailand earlier this fall.

For Hwang Yoo-min, this week represents a critical opportunity.

She has already proven she can win on the LPGA Tour.

Now she needs to show she can do it under the pressure of a season-ending points race.

The Rookie of the Year award would be a career milestone.

It would also give her automatic entry into several elite events next season.

Hwang's bogey-free round suggests her game is sharp.

Her iron play and putting will need to stay solid over the next three days.

The cut line after 36 holes will eliminate roughly half the field.

Players who miss the cut earn no points.

That adds pressure on Hara, who is already trailing Hwang in the first-round score.
