Miami Hurricanes wide receiver Malachi Toney will undergo surgery after suffering a high ankle sprain during practice on Wednesday.

The injury occurred just days before the Hurricanes' marquee road matchup against No. 11 Notre Dame.

Toney, a 19-year-old sophomore, leads Miami's offense with 73 catches on 85 targets for 1,157 all-purpose yards and 13 touchdowns this season.

Medical examinations revealed the injury was serious enough to require surgical intervention.

According to ESPN, the projected recovery period is at least four weeks.

Other reports have suggested a possible absence of four to six weeks.

The injury is not currently considered season-ending.

But the timetable places Toney's availability for the remainder of the regular season in considerable doubt.

Miami entered the week unbeaten at 8-0, including six ACC victories.

On Tuesday, the Hurricanes debuted at No. 1 in the College Football Playoff rankings for the first time in program history.

The celebration lasted less than 24 hours before Toney went down in practice.

The Hurricanes initially released a brief statement confirming Toney had suffered an injury during practice.

He was described as "undergoing further evaluation by the team's medical staff."

Miami now faces four remaining regular-season games without its most productive offensive player.

The schedule begins Saturday with a trip to South Bend to face Notre Dame.

After that, the Hurricanes return home to host Duke, Virginia Tech and Boston College in their final three scheduled contests.

A four-week recovery would potentially place Toney's return near the beginning of December.

Any comeback would require medical clearance rather than simply reaching a projected date.

The Hurricanes could also qualify for the ACC Championship Game.

Their current playoff position offers the possibility of additional games later in December.

Miami's hopes of having Toney available for the College Football Playoff will depend on his recovery and the team's continued success.

Offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson now must reshape the game plan without his top weapon.

Redshirt senior Cooper Barkate is expected to be elevated as the go-to wide receiver.

Barkate has caught 28 passes on 33 targets for 372 yards and four touchdowns this season.

He previously played with quarterback Darian Mensah at Duke last season.

That existing chemistry could become a focal point of the offense.

Sophomore Daylyn Upshaw will likely see more time in the slot in place of Toney.

Upshaw has 263 receiving yards on 22 catches with two touchdowns this season.

He has started in six of eight games.

Other receivers behind them on the depth chart — Vandrevius Jacobs, Somourian Wingo and Vance Spafford — could see increased playing time.

Jacobs is the most experienced with three prior seasons of college football.

The Hurricanes' run game is currently ranked 21st in the Football Bowl Subdivision.

Running backs Mark Fletcher Jr., Javian Mallory and Jordan Lyle have led the ground attack.

Miami has always looked to establish the run, but that emphasis could become even greater without Toney.

The Hurricanes narrowly defeated North Carolina 38-35 in their previous outing.

Although the game against Notre Dame won't affect Miami's ACC record, the result carries significant implications for its national ranking and playoff seeding.
