John Cena recruits iconic rival’s son for his WWE showcase

John Cena found the next invitee to his namesake WWE showcase during a rare appearance on NXT.
The 17-time world champion walked into the WWE Performance Center on the November 4 episode of NXT.
He stood in the ring and announced Zilla Fatu as the second participant in the inaugural John Cena Classic.
Fatu is a third-generation pro wrestler who made his NXT debut earlier this year.
He is the son of the late Umaga, the man Cena feuded with in a historic WWE rivalry nearly 20 years ago.
Umaga and Cena clashed over the WWE Championship in 2007, including a Last Man Standing match at Royal Rumble and a steel cage match on Raw.
Fatu is also the great nephew of Afa and Sika, known in wrestling as The Wild Samoans.
Cena acknowledged his deep connection to the Anoa'i family tree during the announcement.
"I'm here tonight for you. Tonight is very important for me. I kinda feel like an honorary Samoan sometimes," Cena said.
"My legacy dates back to run-ins with Rikishi, standing toe-to-toe with The Rock. Facing Roman Reigns. Throwing a few back with the twins, I love my Uces. And being first in line to give Solo (Sikoa) an opportunity."
Cena paused and looked directly at Fatu.
"Also, I absolutely loved your dad."
Fatu became emotional as Cena spoke about his family.
"Thank you John, thank you," Fatu said.
"You got me really, really emotional right now. I just want to say I appreciate you. I appreciate the relationship you had with my family. I appreciate the relationship you had with each and everybody in my family but I'm more blessed that you are giving me this opportunity."

Fatu then sent a message to everyone tuning into Monday Night Raw on December 14.
"I'm coming for everything."
The John Cena Classic will take place at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Disney World.
It will be part of a special edition of Monday Night Raw on December 14.
The tournament will feature competitors from Raw, SmackDown, and NXT.
WWE fans who sign up for Club WWE will be able to vote on the winner of the event.
Cena unveiled the John Cena Classic Championship belt on Monday.
Cody Rhodes was announced as the first entrant into the tournament.
Fatu is now the second official participant.
The announcement came after a backstage segment earlier in the night.
NXT star Kam Hendrix approached Cena backstage and tried to secure an invite.
Hendrix introduced himself as "Showtime" and asked Cena who his opponent would be in the John Cena Classic, assuming he had already earned a spot.
Cena responded with advice.
"Showtime, I heard it said before that if you're good, you'll tell everyone, and if you're great, they'll tell you," Cena said.
Cena then urged Hendrix to focus on his opponent for next week, EK Prosper, instead of the tournament.

After their interaction, Hendrix posted on X: "Delays Are Not Denials #DAND."
Hendrix and Prosper are set to face off on the November 10 episode of NXT.
The John Cena Classic marks the first time Cena has lent his name to a WWE tournament.
Cena has been making select appearances on WWE programming throughout the fall.
He also appeared at Raw in Brooklyn, New York, where he granted a wish through the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
Cena holds the record for most wishes granted by a single individual, with over 650.
Outside of WWE, Cena has been promoting a new campaign called Big Power, Zero Drama.
The campaign aims to promote clean energy in America.
"Real power doesn't need to brag about it. That's why I'm part of Big Power, Zero Drama, a new campaign about something that's quietly making a big impact across America: clean energy. Wind and solar are helping power homes, businesses, and communities every day. No fanfare," Cena posted on X on November 5.
Fatu's inclusion in the John Cena Classic carries significant weight given the history between Cena and Umaga.
Umaga debuted in WWE in 2006 as a dominant force managed by Armando Alejandro Estrada.
He went undefeated for months before challenging Cena for the WWE Championship.
Their feud culminated in a Last Man Standing match at Royal Rumble 2007, which Cena won.
They also faced off in a steel cage match on Raw in March 2007.
Umaga later feuded with other top stars including Triple H, Jeff Hardy, and Batista.

He was released by WWE in 2009 and passed away in December 2009 at the age of 36.
Fatu has spoken in interviews about carrying on his father's legacy.
He trained at Booker T's Reality of Wrestling school before signing with WWE.
Fatu made his NXT debut in early 2026 and has been building momentum on the brand.
The John Cena Classic is expected to feature eight participants total.
Cena has not announced when the remaining entrants will be revealed.
WWE has not yet announced whether Cena will wrestle in the tournament or serve in a non-wrestling role.
The event will air live on the USA Network as part of Monday Night Raw.
The tournament format gives fans a direct say in determining the winner through Club WWE voting.
This marks a unique twist on the traditional tournament structure in WWE.
Fatu now joins a list of rising stars who have been personally selected by Cena for opportunities.
Cena has a history of elevating younger talent, including his work with the US Championship Open Challenge in 2015.
The John Cena Classic appears to be an extension of that philosophy.
With Fatu and Rhodes as the first two entrants, speculation is already building about who else might receive an invitation.
The tournament represents one of the most anticipated events on WWE's calendar for the remainder of 2026.
