John Cena Salutes Gunther and Reveals Classic Event Surprise on NXT

John Cena made a surprise appearance on WWE NXT Wednesday night at the WWE Performance Center in Orlando, Florida.
Before stepping into the ring, Cena walked past a poster of Gunther on a backstage wall.
He stopped, tipped his hat, and continued on his way.
The gesture was small but loaded with meaning.
Gunther defeated Cena in his final WWE match in December 2025, sending the 17-time world champion into retirement.
Cena has never shown public bitterness about that loss.
On the Busted Open Radio podcast recently, Cena addressed criticism of Gunther's current booking on WWE television.
"I know there's sentiment out there that like, 'Man, they're wasting Gunther!' Maybe currently they are," Cena said.
"But I don't see the view from the penthouse. I'm not in those meetings where they're just looking at the whiteboard, connecting the dots."
Cena added: "Maybe they're just cooling him off. Maybe they're putting him away from TV. I don't know."
"What I am gonna do is I'm not gonna challenge the opinion of, 'Aye, I'm not gonna give this for this guy and you're gonna forget him.'"
"This is the work that I need to do for today, and we're gonna make him look the best we can, and I'm gonna give him as much steam as I can, and what you do with it afterwards, that ain't my call."

The hat-tip on NXT echoed that same respect.
Once inside the ring, Cena received a loud ovation from the NXT audience.
He spoke about the importance of WWE's developmental brand and what it offers young wrestlers.
Then he called for Zilla Fatu to join him in the ring.
Fatu is the son of the late Umaga, a WWE star who died in 2009.
Cena spoke at length about his long history with the Anoa'i wrestling dynasty.
He mentioned Rikishi, The Rock, and Roman Reigns.
He talked about what Umaga personally meant to him.
Fatu struggled to hold back tears as Cena spoke about family legacy in wrestling.
Cena then extended an official invitation to Fatu to compete in the first-ever John Cena Classic.
Fatu accepted, thanked Cena, and hugged him in the ring.
He is now the second confirmed participant in the tournament.

Cody Rhodes was announced as the first entrant on Monday Night Raw.
The John Cena Classic is scheduled for December 14 at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at Walt Disney World in Orlando.
The event will feature competitors from Raw, SmackDown, and NXT.
Fans will vote to determine the eventual winner.
Cena is also scheduled to appear on the November 13 edition of SmackDown in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
The tournament has generated significant buzz since its announcement.
More participants are expected to be revealed in the coming weeks.
Meanwhile, Gunther's position on WWE television has been a topic of debate among fans and industry insiders.
Despite retiring Cena and ending AJ Styles' in-ring career in early 2026, Gunther has since suffered several championship match losses.
He is currently involved in a rivalry with Danhausen.
WWE Hall of Famer JBL recently questioned the company's handling of Gunther on his podcast, Something to Wrestle with John Layfield.
When asked which current Superstar most closely resembles his own approach, JBL immediately named Gunther.

"Gunther. I think Gunther would be the guy," JBL said.
"I think Gunther is a really good heel and I think he understands being a heel."
JBL added: "He's a great heel. I mean, use him. I don't understand. He's retiring all these guys and maybe he retired himself. Maybe he worked himself into a shoot."
JBL also praised Gunther's background in the European wrestling scene.
"Maybe coming up in the European system, those guys are terrific wrestlers over there," he said.
"Maybe that's part of it. Whatever it is about Gunther, I think that guy's world class."
The conversation on the podcast turned to the rarity of performers who fully embrace being hated by audiences.
JBL recalled advice from the late Roddy Piper.
"Piper used to always tell me very few guys in any generation really want to be a heel because very few guys really actually want to be hated," JBL said.
"People don't want to be hated. Very few guys would be heels 24/7 because they want to draw money. And that goes any generation."
JBL mentioned Baron Corbin as another example of someone who understood the traditional heel role.
Cena's hat-tip to Gunther on NXT came against this backdrop of public discussion about the Ring General's status.

The moment was captured on video and circulated online.
It showed two professionals who respect each other despite their in-ring history.
Cena's appearance on NXT served multiple purposes: promoting the John Cena Classic, honoring the Anoa'i family, and quietly acknowledging the man who ended his career.
For Fatu, the invitation represents a major opportunity on a national stage.
For fans, the tournament adds a new element to the WWE calendar.
With Rhodes and Fatu confirmed, speculation continues about who else might enter.
The event takes place in less than six weeks.
Cena's schedule remains active despite his retirement from in-ring competition.
His appearances on Raw, NXT, and the upcoming SmackDown suggest he will remain visible through the end of the year.
The John Cena Classic could become an annual event if successful.
All details about the tournament format and match rules have not yet been released.
WWE has not commented on JBL's remarks about Gunther.

Gunther has not publicly responded to Cena's hat-tip or to JBL's comments.
The rivalry with Danhausen continues on Raw.
Finn Balor's attack on Gunther, which left the Ring General furious after Balor stomped on his groin area, added another layer to the ongoing tension on the red brand.
That incident occurred on a recent episode of Monday Night Raw.
Gunther was seen selling the injury and expressing anger after the broadcast went off the air.
WWE has not announced any disciplinary action regarding the attack.
The John Cena Classic announcement has largely overshadowed the backstage drama.
Cena's NXT appearance drew strong ratings for the brand.
The emotional moment with Fatu was widely shared on social media.
Cena's decision to acknowledge Gunther backstage was noted by fans who have followed the story of his final match.
Whether Gunther's role on WWE television changes in the coming weeks remains an open question.
For now, the focus is on the December tournament and the young wrestler who got the call.
