Nasa Hataoka is the defending champion.
She also won this event in 2018.
The field includes 10 of the top 25 players in the world rankings.
World No. 2 Jeeno Thitikul is the highest-ranked player in the field this week.
Last week's winner Miyu Yamashita, ranked No. 4, is also playing.
Hyo Joo Kim, ranked No. 6, is the only other player inside the top 10.
There is no break on the LPGA schedule after this tournament.
The tour heads directly to Florida for the Annika Sorenstam event.
The season concludes the following week in Naples, Florida, with the CME Group Tour Championship.
World No. 1 Nelly Korda is expected to play in both of those events.
For context on how the event works: The Toto Japan Classic is a standard 72-hole stroke-play tournament on the LPGA Tour.
A cut is made after 36 holes, typically to the top 65 players plus ties.
Players who miss the cut do not receive prize money.

If there is a tie for the lead after 72 holes, an LPGA Tour playoff format is used.
The playoff is sudden death, meaning the first player to win a hole outright takes the title.
Playoff holes are played on a designated rotation of holes determined by tournament officials.
In a sudden-death playoff, if two or more players remain tied after the first extra hole, they continue to the next hole on the rotation.
The playoff continues until one player wins a hole with a lower score than all others.
This format is standard across most LPGA Tour events.
One player to watch this week is Hwang Yoo-min.
She shot a 4-under 68 in the first round at Taiheiyo Club Minori Course.
Hwang recorded four birdies and no bogeys in that round.
She tied for seventh place after the first day.
She was two strokes behind the co-leaders: Miyu Yamashita, Akie Iwai, and Sayaka Takahashi.
Hwang won the LPGA Tour's Lotte Championship last year as an invited player.
She has been listed in the top 25 of tournament leaderboards eight times this year.
Hwang is also competing for the Rookie of the Year award.
She is in second place with 441 points in the Rookie of the Year standings.
Erika Hara of Japan is in first place with 559 points.
The gap between Hwang and Hara is 118 points.
The winner of the Toto Japan Classic receives 150 points toward the Rookie of the Year standings.
Only three competitions remain in the LPGA Tour 2026 season after this week.
Hara shot a 2-under 70 in the first round, with five birdies and three bogeys.
Jeon In-ji and Kang Min-ji each shot 3-under 69, tying for 16th place.
Lee Mi-hyang and Joo Soo-bin tied for 26th at 2-under 70.
Kim Hyo-joo, who is seeking her third win of the 2026 season, finished the first day tied for 40th at 1-under 71.
The final round of the Toto Japan Classic will be played on Sunday.
Prize money is awarded based on final finishing position after 72 holes.
All figures are in U.S. dollars, which is the standard currency for LPGA Tour prize money announcements.
The exchange rate between the U.S. dollar and the Japanese yen does not affect the payout amounts listed here, as the LPGA pays out in dollars.
This tournament is the last stop on the LPGA's fall Asia swing before the tour returns to the United States.
The Asia swing included events in China, South Korea, and Japan.
The Toto Japan Classic has been on the LPGA schedule since 1973.
It is one of the longest-running events on the tour.
The tournament is played annually at the Taiheiyo Club Minori Course in Ibaraki Prefecture.
The course is known as a challenging layout with tree-lined fairways and fast greens.
For American golf fans, this event is airing on the Golf Channel and streaming on NBC Sports platforms.
Check back after the final round for the updated prize money distribution based on actual results.
