MARTA: Ready for massive downtown concerts all week

MARTA says it is prepared for five consecutive nights of concerts by Usher and Chris Brown at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, starting Thursday, November 6, 2026.

The R&B Tour is scheduled for tonight, Friday, Sunday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, with each show beginning at 7 p.m.

Downtown Atlanta Inc. is anticipating an attendance of 70,000 people each night.

That scale matches — and in some ways exceeds — the crowd that caused problems after a Beyoncé concert at the same venue in summer 2025.

Following that event, an escalator collapse at the MARTA station serving the stadium led to chaos and injuries, raising questions about the agency’s ability to handle large crowds.

A reader who described himself as a music fan reached out to Urbanize Atlanta this week with concerns that MARTA might not be fully prepared.

He requested anonymity.

He wrote via email: “Usher/Chris Brown are having a concert at The Benz on Thursday. The concert will probably be over after 11 p.m. with over [50,000] people, and MARTA decides to run North/South trains 24 [minutes] apart. They had to have known about this concert months in advance.”

MARTA says that characterization is not accurate.

According to Payson Schwin, MARTA’s acting senior director of communications, the transit agency plans to run regular rail service throughout the concert’s five-night run downtown.

Starting two hours before each concert, MARTA will insert a shuttle train from Five Points to the SEC District Station to move crowds to the show.

“We will insert a shuttle train from Five Points to the SEC District Station to move crowds to the show,” Schwin wrote via email.

After the concerts, MARTA will add additional trains on both the East/West and North/South lines to get fans home.

Other plans include posting additional staff to assist with crowd control at SEC District, Vine City, and Five Points stations.

The SEC District Station was formerly known as GWCC/CNN Center.

Urbanize Atlanta asked for information on headways — the amount of time between trains at specific platforms — for concert days and nights.

Schwin said it is a bit complicated for a simple answer and provided a more in-depth breakdown.

Pre-event service at stations heading to concerts will operate as follows.

On the Red/Gold Lines, which run North-South, regular peak service will have trains arriving every five minutes at Five Points.

On the Blue/Green Lines, which run East-West, regular peak service will have trains arriving every five minutes at Five Points.

An additional shuttle train will operate continuously between Five Points and SEC District Station.

That shuttle drops off passengers, routes to a pocket track between SEC District and Vine City stations to turn around at King Memorial, and loops back to Five Points to pick up more riders.

This is the same station that experienced the escalator collapse after the Beyoncé concert in 2025.

MARTA did not specify post-event headway numbers in the same detail, but said additional trains will be added on both main lines after each show ends.

The agency did not say how late service would run or whether the last train times would be extended.

The reader who raised concerns said he worried that trains running 24 minutes apart after 11 p.m. would leave thousands of fans stranded or waiting in long lines.

MARTA’s response indicates that normal late-night headways may be supplemented by the extra trains, but the agency did not provide a specific post-concert schedule.

The five-night run represents one of the largest continuous concert events at Mercedes-Benz Stadium since it opened in 2017.

Mercedes-Benz Stadium has a listed capacity of 71,000 for concerts.

Usher and Chris Brown are co-headlining The R&B Tour, which has drawn large crowds in other cities.

The tour is named after their collaborative album, though the setlist includes each artist’s solo hits as well.

Atlanta is a home city for both artists: Usher was born in Dallas but raised in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and moved to Atlanta as a teenager, while Chris Brown was born in Tappahannock, Virginia, but has strong ties to Atlanta’s music scene.

The concerts are expected to draw fans from across the Southeast.

MARTA’s rail system serves the stadium directly via the SEC District Station on the Blue/Green Lines and the Vine City Station on the same lines.
