Mauricio Pochettino Tracks Over 100 Players As Baker-Whiting And Castañeda Earn Maiden USMNT Call-Ups

Mauricio Pochettino Tracks Over 100 Players As Baker-Whiting And Castañeda Earn Maiden USMNT Call-Ups

Mauricio Pochettino revealed his staff is tracking more than 100 players across the player pool as he handed maiden senior call-ups to Reed Baker-Whiting and Santiago Castañeda for the Nations League quarterfinals.

The United States men's national team manager outlined a sweeping philosophy as competitive international football returns.

"The national team is open. We are following 100, more than 100 players," Pochettino stated regarding his scouting network.

"And I think for us, it's really important to give the chance to this player, because I think they deserve. And then because it's really important to test them playing in official games."

His latest 25-man selection confirms that performance outweighs pedigree.

This camp is the second international gathering for the American squad since the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

It also represents their first camp of the new cycle that includes official competitive fixtures.

Pochettino made clear that evaluating talent remains an ongoing mission.

AN EXPANSIVE PLAYER POOL

The former Chelsea and Tottenham manager took charge with a remit to revitalize the U.S. setup.

His roster decisions demonstrate that nobody inside the player pool can afford complacency.

Pochettino expanded his options earlier this autumn by inviting roughly a dozen young players to friendlies.

Those experimental matches produced four consecutive friendly victories.

Rather than closing the door for official competition, the coaching staff kept it wide open.

Pochettino pointed to long-term goals while constructing his latest squad.

"Now it's a moment we need to add players to the roster to try to provide a good balance to the team," Pochettino explained.

He framed this international window as an essential step toward the 2030 World Cup cycle.

"It's a great opportunity for different players now, and … to have the possibility to mix younger with experienced players."

FRESH FACES EARN MAIDEN CALLS

That balance is evident in the two uncapped players included for the upcoming matches.

Defender Reed Baker-Whiting earned his first senior national team call-up.

The 21-year-old has developed his game at Major League Soccer outfit Nashville SC.

He will now test himself among established international players.

Joining him as a first-time inclusion is midfielder Santiago Castañeda.

Castañeda, also 21, currently plays his club football in Germany with SC Paderborn.

Both young players have caught Pochettino's eye through persistent scouting.

They are joined in camp by defender Bryan Reynolds.

The 25-year-old fullback is seeking his first appearance for the United States since 2023.

Reynolds will try to re-establish his standing within the national team depth chart.

RETURNING STARS AND STRIKER DILEMMAS

Pochettino balanced these introductions by bringing back several marquee veterans.

Christian Pulisic returns to the squad for the first time since the World Cup.

Midfielder Weston McKennie is also back in the American fold.

Fullback Sergiño Dest earned a recall after being dropped during the friendly experiments.

Dest had stepped aside when Pochettino evaluated 13 then-uncapped players earlier this autumn.

Striker Folarin Balogun also received an invitation back into the senior side.

Balogun has endured a complicated club campaign with AS Monaco.

A deadline-day transfer to English Premier League club Everton collapsed during the summer window.

He has subsequently struggled to secure consistent minutes in Ligue 1.

Despite those club difficulties, Balogun brings proven pedigree to the international stage.

The forward has scored 12 goals across his 31 senior caps for the U.S. men's team.

Pochettino voiced confidence that international camp will help Balogun regain his rhythm.

"It's a great opportunity to keep helping him (Balogun) to evolve after a tough summer, after the World Cup," Pochettino said.

THE BALANCE BEHIND PEPI'S ABSENCE

Balogun's inclusion coincided with a major omission at the striker position.

PSV Eindhoven forward Ricardo Pepi was conspicuously left off the 25-man roster.

The omission generated immediate discussion among American soccer fans and media.

Pepi has faced physical limitations after returning from an injury setback.

Pochettino addressed the situation directly when asked about leaving Pepi in the Netherlands.

"That is why I think the balance, because Justin and Julian, they are fully fit, I go a little bit ahead, that is why we didn't bring, even if we played a few minutes last week, Pepi, Ricardo," Pochettino stated.

Pepi managed only brief playing time for PSV last week.

"But I think in our way to see and assess the players, we decided much better to keep him training (with PSV) and establish himself being more solid in his fitness and be more confident to attack the future."

Pochettino stressed that neither senior striker was completely operating at peak condition.

"That is why we didn't want to bring both, because I think both are not 100%, but I think the combination in between Balogun, Ellis and Hall is perfect."

He reiterated his satisfaction at having Balogun back under his supervision.

"Yes, happy to see again Balogun because I think after the World Cup, we have the possibility to see and it's a great opportunity for him to keep improving his confidence."

THE TEENAGE INFLUX

Young attackers Julian Hall and Justin Ellis will provide energy up front.

Both forwards made their senior international debuts during the previous camp.

Hall announced himself by scoring three goals across those initial fixtures.

Ellis made an immediate impression as well by finding the net twice.

Their recent form persuaded Pochettino to prioritize them ahead of recovering veterans.

The youth movement extends well beyond the forward line.

Cavan Sullivan retained his spot after impressing the technical staff during friendly play.

Sullivan will now share a locker room with Pulisic as senior international teammates for the first time.

Mathis Albert, Adri Mehmeti, Neil Pierre, and goalkeeper Diego Kochen also received callbacks.

That young cluster of players holds an average age of just 18.1 years.

Their presence comes even though an Olympic-specific youth camp is taking place concurrently.

Pochettino dismissed suggestions that top youngsters should remain with age-group sides.

"We are playing now an official game [and] the priority always is for the first team," Pochettino said.

"And because we all believe that if the players are involved with the first team, [there] is the possibility to keep growing and of course adding more experience — and good experience. It's easy."

ROSTER OMISSIONS SPARK DEBATE

The focus on emerging talent meant established names were excluded.
