Miyu Yamashita chases sixth global win after sharing lead in Japan.

OMITAMA, Japan — Miyu Yamashita, fresh off a victory at the LPGA's Maybank Championship in Malaysia last weekend, is tied for the lead after Thursday's first round of the Toto Japan Classic.

She shot a 6-under-par 66 at the Taiheiyo Club.

She shares the top spot with fellow Japanese players Aki Iwai and Sayaka Takahashi.

The three sit one stroke ahead of a group of three players at 5-under 67: Minami Hiruta, Pajaree Anannarukarn and Fuka Suga.

Nine players are two shots back at 4-under 68, including defending champion Nasa Hataoka.

The course measures 6,598 yards.

The Toto Japan Classic is the last of four tournaments on the LPGA's late-season Asian swing.

Yamashita's win last weekend in Malaysia was her third worldwide title of 2026.

A victory this week would be her fourth of the year.

According to LPGA records, four wins in a single season is a rare feat on the tour.

Yamashita has been one of the most consistent players on the LPGA in 2026.

Her win at the Maybank Championship came after a strong performance in the final round.

She held off a competitive field in Malaysia to secure the trophy.

Now she is back in her home country, playing in front of a Japanese crowd.

The Toto Japan Classic has been part of the LPGA schedule since 1973.

It has produced several repeat winners over the decades.

Nasa Hataoka won the event in 2025 and is in the field again this week.

Jeeno Thitikul is also in the field and entered as a favorite.

Thitikul has won four times already in 2026 and is chasing a fifth title.

Yamashita and Thitikul are two of the most talked-about players on tour this season.

The Asian swing began in South Korea, moved to Malaysia, and now ends in Japan.

Players have traveled thousands of miles over the past few weeks.

Fatigue can become a factor at this stage of the schedule.

Yamashita appears to be handling the travel well.

Her 6-under 66 was a clean round with few mistakes.

She made birdies on the front nine and kept the momentum on the back nine.

Aki Iwai also shot 66, coming off a T-2 finish at the Walmart NW Arkansas Championship in late September.

Iwai has been playing steady golf in recent months.

Sayaka Takahashi matched their score with a bogey-free round.

The leaderboard is packed with Japanese talent.

Six of the top nine players on the leaderboard are from Japan.

That includes the three co-leaders, plus Hiruta, Suga and Hataoka.

Local fans have plenty of players to cheer for this week.

The tournament is being played on a layout that rewards accuracy off the tee.

Fairways are narrow in spots, and the greens are fast.

Players who hit fairways consistently have an advantage.

Yamashita has been accurate with her driver throughout the Asian swing.

Her iron play has also been sharp, setting up birdie chances.

Putting has been a strength for her this season.

She ranks among the top on the LPGA in putting average.

The Toto Japan Classic is a 72-hole event with a cut after 36 holes.

The field includes 78 players from multiple countries.

Yamashita will tee off in the final group on Friday.

She will be paired with Iwai and Takahashi.

The second round will determine who stays in contention for the weekend.

Weather forecasts call for partly cloudy skies with moderate wind.

Wind can be a factor at the Taiheiyo Club, especially in the afternoon.

Players who manage the wind well will have an edge.

Yamashita grew up playing in Japan and is accustomed to these conditions.

She turned professional in 2019 and joined the LPGA in 2022.

Her first LPGA win came in 2023.

She has steadily improved each year since.

In 2025, she recorded multiple top-10 finishes.

Now in 2026, she has broken through with multiple wins.

Her victory in Malaysia was her second of the season.

She also won the Honda LPGA Thailand earlier in 2026.

That win came in February, at the start of the LPGA season.

Between those wins, she has collected several top-5 finishes.

Her consistency has made her a contender in nearly every event she enters.

The LPGA Asian swing is known for attracting strong international fields.

This year's Toto Japan Classic is no exception.

Thitikul, Hataoka, and Yamashita headline a deep field.

Several other top-50 players are also competing.

The tournament has a purse of $2 million.

The winner will receive $300,000.

Yamashita's win in Malaysia earned her $450,000.

She has already surpassed $1.5 million in earnings this season.

A win this week would push her past $2 million for the year.

That would put her among the top earners on the LPGA in 2026.

The season is not over yet.

After the Toto Japan Classic, the LPGA schedule continues with events in the United States.

The CME Group Tour Championship in November will close out the year.

Yamashita is in position to qualify for that event.

She is currently ranked inside the top 10 in the Race to the CME Globe standings.

The top 60 players qualify for the season-ending event.

Yamashita's strong season has also boosted her world ranking.

The Toto Japan Classic has a history of producing dramatic finishes.

In 2025, Hataoka won by two strokes after a final-round 67.

In 2024, the tournament was won in a playoff.

The course at Taiheiyo Club has hosted the event since 2015.

It is a par-72 layout designed by Rees Jones.

The course features water hazards on several holes.

The 18th hole is a par-5 that often decides the tournament.

Players can reach the green in two shots if they hit a good drive.

Yamashita birdied the 18th in her first round.

She will need to keep that momentum going over the next three rounds.

The second round begins Friday morning local time.
