Ravens lose both QBs to IR, season in jeopardy

Ravens lose both QBs to IR, season in jeopardy

The Baltimore Ravens placed quarterbacks Lamar Jackson and Tyler Huntley on injured reserve on Thursday ahead of their Week 9 matchup with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Jackson is set to undergo thumb surgery with discouraging reports but no firm timeline from the team regarding his potential return later this year.

Huntley’s turf toe is thought to be season-ending, though again, the Ravens have yet to confirm.

Both will miss a minimum of four games after landing on IR, making them eligible to return after Baltimore’s Week 13 bye.

Undrafted rookie Joe Fagnano will start against Jacksonville on Thursday night.

Once the Ravens finalize acquiring Jacoby Brissett from the Cardinals, he will likely take over in Week 10 against the Los Angeles Chargers.

The Ravens will drop to 4-5 with a likely loss to the Jaguars.

The winless Chargers are about as beatable as they come, and the Texans and Panthers are a combined 5-9.

Getting to 6-7 before the bye seems possible, but making the postseason after that relies on a successful return from Jackson.

The two-time MVP has stated his reluctance to play before he is healthy enough to do so already this year; feeling comfortable with an injured throwing hand might be an even higher bar to clear.

The Ravens promoted Austin Reed from the practice squad to the active roster to back up Fagnano on Thursday night.

Kedon Slovis will serve as the emergency No. 3 quarterback.

Baltimore also elevated outside linebacker Adisa Isaac and kicker Jake Moody from the practice squad to face the Jaguars.

Isaac adds depth off the edge and on special teams after Tavius Robinson’s season-ending injury, while Moody replaces Tyler Loop after his IR placement on Tuesday.

LAMAR JACKSON'S INJURY

The injury occurred on November 1 against the Buffalo Bills, when Jackson hurt his right thumb on Baltimore’s first offensive snap.

His throwing hand collided with Bills pass rusher Greg Rousseau as he attempted a pass to Zay Flowers.

Head coach Jesse Minter confirmed after the 36-10 loss that Jackson would undergo surgery and be placed on injured reserve, meaning he must miss at least four games.

The possibility of a season-ending injury has also been raised.

As of November 5, the team has not announced a date for his return.

His actual recovery could take longer depending on how he responds to surgery and rehabilitation.

TYLER HUNTLEY'S STATUS

Huntley entered the game after Jackson left but exited in the first half with a toe injury.

He has earned 727 passing yards, four touchdowns, and a 57.6 QBR this season.

His familiarity with Baltimore’s offense provided some stability, but his production hasn't reversed the team’s slide.

His turf toe is now expected to end his season, though the team has not made an official statement confirming that.

JOE FAGNANO TAKES THE REINS

Fagnano, who entered the game as Baltimore’s emergency third quarterback against Buffalo, finished that contest with 10 completions on 21 attempts for 91 passing yards and one interception.

He also lost a fumble in the 36-10 defeat.

He will have to overcome some physical concerns of his own.

He sustained an ankle injury against Buffalo but was upgraded to a full participant in Tuesday’s practice.

Minter praised his composure and ability to manage the offense.

THE RAVENS' CURRENT STANDING

The Ravens have gone 1-2 without Lamar Jackson during the 2026 NFL season.

They sit at the bottom of the AFC North with a 4-4 record.

The Pittsburgh Steelers, led by Mike McCarthy, sit comfortably at 6-2, leaving their division rivals scrambling to keep pace before the Nov. 10 deadline.

Pittsburgh has a two-game advantage over Baltimore.

The Ravens are also 0-2 against AFC North opponents.

While Pittsburgh rests during its Week 9 bye week, Jesse Minter and his staff must evaluate the roster to try to save the season.

They’ve lost three consecutive games and need a momentum boost to remain competitive in the division.

OFFENSIVE STRUGGLES

This season, Minter’s group ranks 15th in total offense (338.6) and 21st in passing offense (205.1).

They rank 19th in scoring, averaging 22.4 points per game.
