Ronaldo Quits Portugal Team After Coach Clash

Cristiano Ronaldo has retired from the Portugal national team after a reported fallout with head coach Jorge Jesus.

His announcement came via a video posted on social media, where he said, "The day has come to return the number seven shirt to the national team of all of us."

"I never felt it was exclusively mine, but for 23 years I had the privilege and responsibility of wearing it," he added.

Ronaldo, now 41, made the decision just days after being sanctioned by the Disciplinary Council of the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) with a 30-day suspension and a fine of 255 euros.

That punishment stemmed from an incident on September 30, when Ronaldo left the Portugal camp without authorization.

The retirement was not widely expected.

Many observers believed Ronaldo was determined to continue with the national team after the 2026 World Cup.

Now fans are asking a different question: Will he keep playing at the club level?

Ronaldo currently plays for Al Nassr in the Saudi Pro League.

His contract with the Saudi Arabian club runs through the end of this season.

No reports or rumors have surfaced about whether Al Nassr will offer him a contract extension.

If no new deal is signed, Ronaldo could either join another club for a short stint or consider full retirement from professional football.

For now, Ronaldo is expected to continue playing for Al Nassr for the remainder of the season.

Their next match is scheduled for next week against Al Qadsiah in the Saudi Pro League.

Ronaldo has not confirmed any plans to retire from professional football entirely.

His club future remains uncertain beyond the current campaign.

The Portugal retirement itself has drawn widespread reaction.

Reinaldo Teixeira, president of Liga Portugal, released a statement thanking Ronaldo for his legacy.

Teixeira called Ronaldo a "symbol" of national identity and "a personality that transcends countries and cultures."

"Cristiano Ronaldo's journey, as a person and as a footballer, has long been intertwined with the name of Portugal," Teixeira wrote.

"He is, and will remain for many years, a symbol of our cultural identity and of the invaluable contribution he makes to this passion shared by many millions of citizens around the world: football."

Teixeira added that Ronaldo's decision "resonates with the feelings of many people on a global scale."

"What he gave us cannot fit into half a dozen lines or comments," Teixeira said.

"And he will keep giving."

"It is my conviction that, despite having taken off the national team shirt, feeling and knowing himself to be Portuguese will be an outfit that remains on his skin and in his emotions."

Teixeira concluded: "His story will be eternal."

The retirement ends a 23-year international career.

Ronaldo made his senior debut for Portugal in 2003 at age 18.

He went on to become the most capped men's player in international football history, with 217 appearances for his country.

He also holds the record for most international goals, with 135.

During his time with Portugal, Ronaldo won two major trophies: UEFA Euro 2016 and the 2019 UEFA Nations League.

His career at the club level has been equally storied.

Ronaldo has played for Sporting CP, Manchester United, Real Madrid, Juventus, and Al Nassr.

He has won five Ballon d'Or awards, five UEFA Champions League titles, and league championships in England, Spain, and Italy.

His move to Al Nassr in January 2023 was seen as a landmark moment for Saudi football.

The contract was reportedly worth around $200 million per year, including commercial and sponsorship deals.

Since joining Al Nassr, Ronaldo has continued to score goals at a high rate.

In the 2024-25 season, he finished as the Saudi Pro League's top scorer with 35 goals.

But his relationship with Portugal coach Jorge Jesus had reportedly become strained in recent months.

Jesus, who also coached Ronaldo at Al Nassr during the 2022-23 season, was appointed Portugal manager earlier this year.

The two have a complex history.

At Al Nassr, Ronaldo and Jesus had a public disagreement during a match in April 2023, when Ronaldo appeared to react angrily to being substituted.

That tension appears to have carried over into the national team setup.

The 30-day suspension issued by the FPF's Disciplinary Council was for leaving the Portugal camp on September 30.

Ronaldo's video announcement did not mention Jesus or the suspension directly.

He simply said, "Today the moment has come to hand (the shirt) over to the future."

"It was not an easy decision because there are decisions that are not made with the head alone," he said.

The timing of the retirement has drawn comparisons to other great players who struggled to let go.

Commentators have noted that for at least three tournaments, there was a sense of Ronaldo holding Portugal back.

At the 2022 World Cup, then-coach Fernando Santos benched Ronaldo for the round-of-16 match against Switzerland.

Portugal won 6-1, and Ronaldo's replacement, Gonçalo Ramos, scored a hat-trick.

Still, Ronaldo remained the center of attention.

Even in the final minutes of that game, half the crowd chanted his name.

He scored a goal that was clearly offside, celebrated with his signature "Siuuuu" motion, and drew the biggest cheer of the night.
