Rory McIlroy Was Right About LIV Golf All Along

Rory McIlroy Was Right About LIV Golf All Along

Rory McIlroy gave a full explanation after a two-shot penalty turned his opening-round 68 into a 70 at the Abu Dhabi Aldar Championship on Thursday.

The 37-year-old Northern Irishman was assessed the penalty following a video review of his play on the par-4 12th hole.

McIlroy entered the scorer's tent thinking he would sign for a four-under 68.

Instead, rules officials presented him with footage that showed his wedge tamping down grass behind his ball during his pre-shot routine.

McIlroy accepted the penalty but disputed that he had intentionally broken the rule.

"Obviously there's no intent. I play by the rules," McIlroy said in his post-round press conference, according to Golf Channel.

"I try to do everything that I can to never end up in these positions."

The incident occurred after McIlroy's approach shot on the 12th hole ended up just over the green at the bottom of a steep hill.

His chip shot nearly crested the hill before rolling back to his feet into a divot.

A close-up video showed McIlroy placing his wedge behind the ball as he prepared for his fourth shot.

The grass behind the ball did not return to its original position after he lifted the clubhead.

"They showed me a video from 12," McIlroy explained, per the DP World Tour.

"Hit my first chip shot from down the bottom of the hill, didn't get up, came back down and rolled into a divot."

"And then I went to just sort of get a feel for the lie, the close up of the camera, you can see like a little piece of grass around the divot sort of lies down as I put my club down behind the ball."

"I guess the grass doesn't return to its original position."

McIlroy admitted the footage looked problematic.

"By looking at the video, it doesn't look very good," he said.

"Obviously that wasn't my intent, I'm just trying to get a feel for the lie."

"I don't feel like I pressed down. But at the same time, I don't want the perception of, like, people thinking like I got away with something either."

"So I'm happy to take the 2-shot penalty and move on and move into tomorrow."

The penalty was applied under Rule 8.1 of the Rules of Golf.

Rule 8.1 prohibits players from improving their lie, the area of intended stance or the area of intended swing.

Rule 8.1b specifically bans moving, bending or breaking any "growing or attached natural object."

The penalty turned McIlroy's six on the 12th hole into an eight.

His final score of 70 left him eight shots back of the lead after the first round.

McIlroy had started the day with one goal in mind: overtake Eugenio Chacarra in the Race to Dubai rankings.

His scorecard featured six birdies before the penalty was applied.

The only other blemish was the double bogey on the 12th hole.

McIlroy came into the tournament after a strong PGA Tour season.

The six-time major champion has been one of the most vocal critics of LIV Golf, the Saudi-backed breakaway league.

McIlroy has repeatedly said LIV Golf's goal was to "destroy" the DP World Tour.

He has also criticized players who joined LIV for what he called "performative" behavior.

The irony of McIlroy being caught in a rules controversy was not lost on observers.

Some noted that McIlroy has been a stickler for golf's rules throughout his career.

Others pointed out that the incident came at a time when LIV Golf is reportedly winding down operations.

Multiple reports have suggested that LIV Golf is struggling financially and may not survive beyond the current season.

McIlroy's former Ryder Cup teammate has fired back amid the LIV Golf collapse narrative.

The controversy in Abu Dhabi added another layer to the ongoing tension between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf.

McIlroy has been seen as the face of the PGA Tour's resistance to LIV Golf.

His acceptance of the penalty was seen by some as consistent with his public stance on playing by the rules.

McIlroy said he did not want people thinking he got away with something.

"I'm happy to take the 2-shot penalty and move on," he repeated.

The incident raised questions about how video technology is changing golf.

Rules officials now routinely review footage after rounds to check for violations.

Players have been penalized for everything from moving a loose impediment to grounding a club in a hazard.

McIlroy's case was unusual because the violation was caught on a close-up camera.

Most rules reviews involve obvious breaches like a ball moving on the green.

The grass-tamping incident was subtle enough that McIlroy said he did not realize it happened.

"I'm just trying to get a feel for the lie," he insisted.

Golf analysts debated whether the penalty was fair.

Some argued that the grass moving was unintentional and should not have been penalized.

Others said the rule is clear and the video evidence was conclusive.

The DP World Tour stood by the decision.

McIlroy will play the second round on Friday looking to make up ground.

He is currently eight shots behind the leader, Francesco Laporta.

Laporta set the early pace with a 62 in the first round.

McIlroy has won the Abu Dhabi Championship twice before, in 2010 and 2021.

The tournament is one of the flagship events on the DP World Tour schedule.

McIlroy's performance in Abu Dhabi will affect his Race to Dubai standing.

He entered the week second in the standings behind Chacarra.

The two-shot penalty made his task harder but not impossible.

McIlroy has a history of bouncing back from adversity.

He won the PGA Championship in 2023 after a difficult start to the season.

He also won the Dubai Desert Classic earlier this year.

The controversy in Abu Dhabi is unlikely to derail his season.

But it added an unexpected chapter to his complicated relationship with golf's rulebook.

McIlroy has been penalized before for rules violations.

In 2021, he was given a two-shot penalty at the Memorial for accidentally moving his ball during a practice swing.

He also received a penalty in 2019 at the WGC-HSBC Champions for a similar grass-tamping incident.
