Ryan Day drops crucial Julian Sayin injury update for Oregon

Ohio State head coach Ryan Day provided the latest update on quarterback Julian Sayin’s elbow injury Thursday afternoon.
Day said he received positive news about the injury.
He called it “a decent outcome for us” from a long-term perspective.
But he also made clear Sayin will not return anytime soon.
“It’s not gonna be next week or next month,” Day said.
That means Sayin will miss the remainder of the regular season at least.

Sayin suffered the injury on Oct. 17 in the final minutes of Ohio State’s win over Indiana.
He took a hit in the fourth quarter and left the game with his right arm dangling.
He returned to the sideline before the game ended with his arm in a sling.
At the time of the injury, Ohio State led Indiana 19-15.
Backup quarterback Luke Fahey replaced Sayin on the next drive.
Fahey helped the Buckeyes pick up a first down on his first play with an eight-yard scramble aided by a late hit penalty.

He went 0-for-2 for the rest of the game.
Ohio State relied on its defense for the final 7:38 to hold the lead.
Sayin was having his worst performance in 21 starts before the injury.
He had completed 15 of 29 passes for 235 yards and two touchdowns.
He also threw two interceptions.
For the season, Sayin had thrown for 2,007 yards, 19 touchdowns and four interceptions.

He was completing 68.2 percent of his passes.
After the injury, Sayin returned home to California.
He rejoined the Buckeyes for the USC game and returned to Columbus with the team.
He has been at practice and in meetings this week.
Fahey started against USC last week and performed well despite a 30-18 loss.
He finished 21 of 38 for 260 yards and a touchdown.

He put the ball in danger once but mostly held his own.
Day said the positive news about Sayin came after considering the different options that were available going into the situation.
“All things considered, the outcome with the different options that were (available) kind of going into the situation thinking it could be, I think this has been a decent outcome for us and for him,” Day said.
“We’ll kind of let him go through that, but this thing looks to be healing.”
“It’s not gonna be next week or next month.”
“It’s gonna take some time, but I think certainly for the long term, we feel like we’re on a good track here.”

Day said Sayin is working with Fahey in meetings.
“Just somebody who’s been through it before and just a voice in his ear giving him tips on what to look out for and how he can better approach things,” Day said.
“It’s been good to have him in the meetings, having Julian around the team and in all the meetings.”
Ohio State already has two losses on the season.
The Buckeyes cannot afford another loss heading into a November schedule that includes matchups against Oregon, Northwestern, Michigan and Nebraska.
The College Football Playoff National Championship is scheduled for Jan. 25, 2027.
If the Buckeyes make it that far with Fahey, they would have to win eight straight games.
Day’s update underscored the urgency the team faces.
Sayin is likely out for the remainder of the season.
But the long-term prognosis remains positive.
“We feel like we’re on a good track here,” Day said.
