Shelton and Paul set for explosive Paris quarterfinal clash

Ben Shelton fought back from a set down to defeat Arthur Rinderknech 3-6, 6-4, 7-6(5) in the third round of the Paris Masters on Thursday, November 6, 2026.

Shelton found himself in deep trouble in the deciding tiebreak, trailing 2-4 before winning five of the next six points to close out the match.

The win puts Shelton into the quarterfinals at the Accor Arena in Paris.

Waiting for him there is fellow American Tommy Paul.

Paul advanced earlier in the day with a straight-sets win over another French home hope, Quentin Halys.

The quarterfinal matchup is the first all-American quarterfinal at the Paris Masters.

The head-to-head between Shelton and Paul is tied at 2-2.

Shelton spoke after the match about the challenge ahead.

"It's been a long time since we've been on the court, but I'm looking forward to it," Shelton told the ATP website.

"He's in great form right now. A great player, a great friend. I've been rooting for him all year to make a push and make it to Turin. It will be fireworks tomorrow."

The match carries major stakes for both players.

For Paul, the Paris Masters represents his last chance to qualify for the Nitto ATP Finals in Turin, which begin later this month.

Paul must win his quarterfinal against Shelton to keep his Turin dream alive.

Shelton has already secured his spot at the ATP Finals.

Shelton's path to the Paris title so far includes a first-round bye, a second-round win over Cameron Norrie 6-3, 6-4, and Thursday's third-round victory over Rinderknech.

If he beats Paul, Shelton would face either Lorenzo Musetti or Luca Van Assche in the semifinals.

Carlos Alcaraz is the projected final opponent on the other side of the draw.

During his on-court interview after the Rinderknech match, Shelton was asked about the court speed at the Paris Masters.

An ATP spokesperson said: "Since they started measuring court speed on tour, this is the quickest court there's been. How is that transferring to the game and to your game?"

Shelton disagreed with the characterization.

"I don't agree. I think Basel last week was faster," Shelton stated.

"I think Cincinnati was also faster, but that's just me."

According to Tennis Abstract, the 2025 Paris Masters had a surface speed rating of 0.94, which falls in the bottom half of court speed measurements across all ATP Tour events.

Tennis Abstract has not yet published its court speed data for the 2026 Paris Masters.

Shelton acknowledged that the surface requires adjustment.
