Unexpected Royal Steps In as Queen Camilla Takes Rest Days

An unexpected royal relative just covered for Queen Camilla, who is taking some rest days after what palace sources are calling a grueling trip with King Charles.

Queen Camilla would ordinarily attend the Field of Remembrance at Westminster Abbey.

The event is currently in its 98th year.

But she was not able to complete the engagement in 2026.

“Queen Camilla would usually attend; however, she is taking some rest days after arriving from a busy royal tour in the Caribbean,” the Express reported.

“Their Majesties only flew back to the U.K. yesterday [November 4].”

Birgitte, Duchess of Gloucester, was able to stand in for Queen Camilla at the Field of Remembrance while King Charles’s wife recovers from her grueling trip abroad.

The Duchess of Gloucester has stepped in for Queen Camilla at an important Remembrance event.

Birgitte, who is married to Prince Richard, the Duke of Gloucester, planted a cross in Westminster Abbey’s Field of Remembrance on Thursday to honour members of the Armed Forces who have lost their lives.

Before planting a cross, the Duchess was met by the Dean of Westminster, the Very Rev Dr David Hoyle, and the veterans’ charity Poppy Factory’s president, Vice Admiral Sir David Steel.

The Last Post sounded before a two-minute silence after Big Ben struck 11 am.

Birgitte then met Defence Secretary Wes Streeting and veterans minister Calvin Bailey, as well as service personnel, veterans, and their families.

She also met the Staffordshire Regiment Association’s mascots – two black Staffordshire bull terriers, Sergeant Watchman VI and Private Watchman VII.

Their handler, Greg Hedges, described royal attendance at the event as “very nice” and said the Duchess briefly petted both dogs.

The Field of Remembrance has been organised by the Poppy Factory, of which Camilla is patron, and held in the grounds of Westminster Abbey since November 1928.

It sees thousands of poppies planted each year on wooden symbols and tributes.

The Duchess, who celebrated her 80th birthday in June, is a working royal.

She was born in Denmark and married the Duke, who is a first cousin of the late Queen, in 1972.

Why was Queen Camilla absent?

Queen Camilla was likely absent as she’s recovering from her six-day visit to Antigua and Barbuda with King Charles.

The King had completed solo state visits to the Bahamas and Guyana before he reunited with his wife for a jam-packed schedule.

The couple caught their flight home on Wednesday, so they will likely be readjusting to being back in the UK and the four-hour time difference, as well as getting some much-needed rest before the weekend’s Remembrance events.

Their Majesties received a simple ceremonial send-off as the Royal Police Force Band played the British and Antiguan national anthems before the couple boarded the ministerial jet Voyager and gave a salute.

Charles also inspected a guard of honour, which stood to attention in the hot and humid conditions, before walking up the steps with his wife and waving goodbye.

It’s been widely reported that Camilla dislikes flying and that traveling from the U.K. to the Caribbean would likely take a toll on her.

As a result, her decision to take some rest days after flying home makes even more sense.

The Field of Remembrance has taken place since 1928 and provides an opportunity for attendees to pay tribute to members of the armed forces who have died.

As the official website noted, “Your tributes ensure their sacrifices are remembered and that those living with the impact of service are never forgotten.”

As for why Camilla joined the tour halfway through, Royal Editor Emily Nash told HELLO!’s A Right Royal Podcast: “We know she’s going to be 80 next year.

“She doesn’t love long-haul travel.

“She, I think, finds being out in the heat…”

Following King Charles and Queen Camilla’s Caribbean tour, they also shared new portraits taken in Antigua and Barbuda.

Queen Camilla wore a handmade Antiguan bracelet while King Charles chose a locally significant pocket square.

“A shared journey is measured not by the miles travelled but the moments that stay with us,” courtiers captioned the new snaps on social media.

Two new portraits of the royal couple were released on Thursday, Nov. 5, to mark the conclusion of their Caribbean tour.
