Alycia Baumgardner Steps Up To Lightweight To Challenge Unbeaten Champion Elif Nur Turhan In Texas

Alycia Baumgardner is stepping up to the 135-pound division in Texas to challenge unbeaten IBF lightweight champion Elif Nur Turhan in three-minute rounds.
The unified super-featherweight champion is deliberately hunting for new territory.
She leaves behind the 130-pound limit to face a titleholder feared for her finishing ability.
Turhan enters the ring with an unblemished professional record.
The Turkish champion captured the International Boxing Federation belt in dramatic fashion.
Turhan took the title by knocking out Beatriz Ferreira in the fifth round in December 2025.
She had already signaled her power by dropping the Brazilian standout in the opening round of that bout.
That victory placed Turhan firmly on the map as one of the division's most dangerous punchers.
Yet Baumgardner arrives in the Lone Star State completely unfazed by her opponent's reputation.
A CLASH OF STYLES AT 135 POUNDS
Baumgardner views the stylistic matchup as a clear contrast between versatility and predictability.
She has openly branded the defending champion as a limited competitor.
"She has never been in the ring with someone like me," Baumgardner said.
"I am not just a one-way fighter like herself: I have skills, I have great power, I have great footwork and my timing is impeccable."
"Skills pay the bills," she added.
Baumgardner believes her complete technical package will neutralize raw aggression once the bell sounds.
She expects Turhan to struggle from the very start of the contest.
"I wouldn't say she is the most dangerous [fighter I have faced] but she does hit hard," Baumgardner admitted.
She acknowledged the impressive manner in which Turhan dismantled Ferreira to claim world honors.

"I haven't felt her power enough to know if she hits hard [but] in terms of how she beat a world champion like Beatriz [Ferreira], I have to give her credit for that," Baumgardner noted.
Even so, the American contender insists she has identified glaring defensive vulnerabilities.
"The previous fights I have seen she is easy to hit," Baumgardner explained.
She believes the champion will be forced to reconsider her aggressive mindset immediately.
"Once she gets hit by my power she is going to realise, 'okay,'" Baumgardner warned.
THREE-MINUTE ROUNDS AND RESUME BUILDING
This championship showdown will feature three-minute rounds.
Standard championship boxing for women has historically been contested across two-minute frames.
Competing over three-minute rounds increases both physical exertion and tactical exposure.
For Baumgardner, the setting and conditions represent a deliberate statement to the boxing community.
She maintains that other contenders deliberately avoided sharing a ring with the dangerous Turkish power puncher.
"I am stepping up and fighting a fighter no one in the 135lb division wanted to fight," Baumgardner stated.
"That tells a story and adds to my résumé that I'm always up for the challenge."
Baumgardner brings an elite 18-1 record into the championship clash.
Her resume includes notable high-profile victories against former unified champion Mikaela Mayer.
She also recently defended her status against Bo Mi Re Shin.
Those tests at 130 pounds proved her resilience across championship distances.
Now, the challenge shifts to whether her power and defensive movement translate up to the lightweight limit.
CLAIMING THE MANTLE OF WOMEN'S BOXING

This title challenge arrives at a historic turning point for women's boxing.
The sport is transitioning after years of domination by legendary pioneers.
Irish icon Katie Taylor hung up her gloves earlier this year following an unforgettable career.
Multi-division world champion Amanda Serrano has signaled that her own legendary career is winding down.
With those towering figures departing, Baumgardner sees an open lane to take control of the entire sport.
She does not believe the position should be handed over passively.
"I didn't need to be passed the torch, I took it," Baumgardner told ESPN.
She views this lightweight title fight as the definitive platform to prove her standing as the world's leading female fighter.
In her mind, modern champions must claim their place rather than wait for recognition to arrive.
THE SHADOW OF CAROLINE DUBOIS
Beyond Turhan, another major lightweight champion watches this weekend's contest closely.
British standout Caroline Dubois currently holds both the WBC and WBO lightweight titles.
Dubois has made no secret of her ambition to stage a massive undisputed showdown in 2027.
Tensions between Dubois and Baumgardner erupted publicly earlier in the year.
The pair engaged in a heated verbal altercation after Dubois defeated Amelia Moore in Birmingham in August.
Dubois subsequently branded Baumgardner a "coward" following their heated ringside exchange.
Baumgardner dismissed Dubois' criticism and warned of what would happen if they meet in the ring.
"I just easily pick her apart," Baumgardner said of Dubois.
"I see a lot of holes in her game."

"I see a lot of her questioning herself and how she does things."
Baumgardner relies heavily on her natural ring awareness rather than scripted corner adjustments.
"I don't need a trainer to tell me step-by-step what to do," she explained.
"I already know it because I see it."
Baumgardner believes Dubois understands the sheer scale of the challenge that awaits her.
"She knows deep down that she's up for a challenge," Baumgardner remarked.
"She's hungry, she's a champion but she knows that she's up against a world-class fighter."
Baumgardner believes she operates at a ceiling Dubois cannot touch.
"She knows that she's going to really have to up her game, but every time she ups her game, I up mine 10 more, so you're trying to reach something that you can't fully reach," she said.
Still, Baumgardner emphasized that Dubois must continue to win her own battles to keep the 2027 clash viable.
"When that time comes, we'll see," Baumgardner noted.
"A fight against Caroline is definitely there but she still needs to do her job."
"She still needs to show up."
HIGH STAKES IN TEXAS
Before any future blockbuster can materialize, Baumgardner must survive the danger right in front of her.
Turhan represents an undefeated champion fighting on absolute momentum.
The Turkish fighter's fifth-round destruction of Ferreira confirmed her ability to end world-class opposition inside the distance.
Taking away Turhan's title requires Baumgardner to absorb or avoid shots from a naturally larger puncher.
The event will be broadcast live on Sky Sports on Sunday night in Texas, airing at 1:30 am on Monday morning in the UK.
The boxing world now awaits whether Baumgardner's elite ring IQ can outshine the champion's brute force.
