Belichick Finally Advances in Hall of Fame After 2026 Snub

Bill Belichick has advanced to the next round of consideration for the Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2027.
The former New England Patriots head coach is one of five nominees to move forward in the voting process.
Belichick joins Tom Coughlin, Mike Holmgren, Dan Reeves and Mike Shanahan as the finalists in the coach category.
This is Belichick's second year of eligibility.
He was not voted into Canton in his first year of eligibility in 2026.
That snub surprised a majority of the football world.
The Hall of Fame released a statement at the time addressing the public reaction.
“The Hall also respects the members of the Selection Committee when they follow the selection process bylaws,” the statement read.
Belichick himself addressed the snub in May 2026 on “Hang Out With Sean Hannity.”
“Out of my control,” Belichick said.
“Honestly, I’ve been very focused on my job at the University of North Carolina and the players, and the university there. So, whatever happens, happens.”
He added: “I’m proud of what we accomplished as a team at New England and certainly at the Giants and proud of those relationships, so that’s what matters most.”
Belichick is now the head coach at UNC.
He took over the Tar Heels in December 2024.
His NFL coaching resume includes eight total Super Bowl victories.
Six of those came with the Patriots.
He also won two as defensive coordinator with the New York Giants.
Belichick helped build two separate dynasties in New England.

Despite that record, the Hall of Fame selection committee did not vote him in during his first year of eligibility.
The Pro Football Hall of Fame made sweeping changes to its selection process after the 2026 snub.
All five coaches who advanced this year also advanced to this point in the selection process last year.
This is the fourth time Holmgren has advanced to this point.
Don Coryell was the last coach selected for the Hall of Fame.
He was part of the Class of 2023.
A subcommittee will meet on Nov. 17 to decide on one candidate to present to the full selection committee.
That one candidate will then be considered by the full selection committee ahead of the Super Bowl.
The Pro Football Hall of Fame selection process involves multiple rounds of voting.

Candidates must receive at least 80 percent of the vote from the selection committee to be elected.
The selection committee is made up of media members from across the country.
Each member represents a different NFL market or national outlet.
The coach category is separate from the player and contributor categories.
Belichick's eligibility began in 2026, five years after his last season as an NFL head coach.
He last coached in the NFL in 2023 with the Patriots.
He and the Patriots parted ways after the 2023 season.
Belichick finished his NFL head coaching career with 333 regular-season wins.
That is the second-most all time, behind only Don Shula.

He also has 31 postseason wins, the most in NFL history.
His six Super Bowl wins as a head coach are tied with George Halas for the most all time.
Belichick's 2026 snub was one of the most debated Hall of Fame decisions in recent memory.
Many analysts and fans argued that his resume was clearly Hall of Fame worthy.
Others pointed to controversies during his tenure, including Spygate and Deflategate.
The Hall of Fame's bylaw changes after the snub were seen by many as a response to the backlash.
The exact changes to the process have not been fully detailed by the Hall.
The Nov. 17 subcommittee meeting will be a key step in determining Belichick's fate.
If the subcommittee selects Belichick, he will go before the full selection committee.
If he gets 80 percent of the vote, he will be part of the Class of 2027.
If he does not get selected by the subcommittee, he will have to wait for another year.
Coughlin, Holmgren, Reeves and Shanahan also have strong Hall of Fame cases.
Coughlin won two Super Bowls as head coach of the New York Giants.
Holmgren won a Super Bowl with the Green Bay Packers and took the Seattle Seahawks to another.
Reeves took three different teams to the Super Bowl as a head coach.
Shanahan won two Super Bowls as head coach of the Denver Broncos.
The competition among the five finalists is significant.
Only one of them will be presented to the full selection committee.
The Hall of Fame Class of 2027 will be announced during the week of the Super Bowl.
Belichick's advancement is the first step in what could be a long road to Canton.
The football world will be watching the Nov. 17 meeting closely.
