Carrie Coon Says Taylor Swift’s Bertha Impression Is ‘Very Good

Carrie Coon had nothing but good things to say Wednesday night about Taylor Swift‘s impression of her character, Bertha Russell, from “The Gilded Age.”
Last year, Swift stopped by “The Tonight Show” and opened up about her love of the HBO series and Coon’s performance in it.
In that same interview, she even launched into an impression of her character Bertha, which made waves online last October (as most things involving Swift typically do).
During Coon’s “Tonight Show” visit Wednesday night, Jimmy Fallon re-upped the clip of Swift’s impression, which garnered some immediate praise from the actress.
“She’s very good,” Coon replied.
“I didn’t see it that night [last year], and then I woke up to thousands of text messages and Instagram, being like, ‘Can you believe it?!’” she added.
“I have to say, it’s very good.”
Coon went on to draw some parallels between Swift and her “Gilded Age” character, the ambitious matriarch of the show’s new money Russell family.
“It’s the right affectation,” she said of the impression.

“She’s so Bertha. I mean, she’s such an entrepreneur.”
“Bertha would be like Taylor Swift if she was living today,” Coon argued, before conceding, “Well, maybe not the singing.”
Coming off Matt Damon and David Letterman’s surprise, blink-and-you’ll-miss-it cameo appearance in the “Gilded Age” Season 4 premiere last week, Fallon asked Coon whether or not she thinks Swift should be the next star to show up in the HBO series.
“I think she should!” Coon said.
She went on to reference Swift’s cameo in this year’s Mariska Hargitay-hosted Emmy Awards, telling Fallon, “I saw her cameo at the Emmys when she was doing the ‘SVU’ send-up. She was really great. I feel like she’d be an excellent nemesis.”
Coon’s endorsement comes at a time when Swift has been making headlines for reasons beyond her music.
Reports have surfaced that Swift is “genuinely anxious” after receiving backlash over her public persona and awards campaign tactics.
Critics have accused the singer of behaving like a politician in her promotional efforts, particularly as she campaigns for an Oscar nomination for her “Toy Story 5” song “I Knew It, I Knew You.”
Swift has not publicly responded to the criticism.

Meanwhile, her personal life has also been in the spotlight.
Swift married Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce at Madison Square Garden in July 2026.
Kelce recently told WWD that he is “excited for my first holiday as a married man.”
The couple has been navigating the intersection of Swift’s global fame and Kelce’s NFL career.
Kylie Kelce, Travis’s sister-in-law, opened up on her “Not Gonna Lie” podcast about raising her four young daughters in the public eye after Swift joined the family.
“I always say, like, we’re not gonna hole up in our house and keep our kids hidden. We’re not hermits,” Kylie said.
She explained that she has already begun preparing her children for potentially uncomfortable interactions with strangers who recognize them because of their famous aunt.
“Every single time we get out of the car when we’re going somewhere, I’m like, ‘Just because someone knows mom’s name does not mean that mom knows them,’ or ‘Just because someone might call you by your name, you might not know them,’” she said.
Back to the world of “The Gilded Age,” the show’s Season 4 premiere featured a surprise cameo by Matt Damon and David Letterman.

It remains to be seen whether Swift will accept Coon’s invitation to appear on the series.
But Coon made clear she would welcome it.
“I feel like she’d be an excellent nemesis,” Coon said.
Swift’s previous acting credits include roles in films such as “Cats,” “The Giver,” and the upcoming “Toy Story 5,” for which she wrote and performed the song “I Knew It, I Knew You.”
She also made a cameo at the 2026 Emmy Awards, appearing in a sketch paying homage to “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” hosted by Mariska Hargitay.
Coon praised that performance as “really great.”
The actress’s comments Wednesday night have reignited fan speculation about a potential Swift appearance on the HBO period drama.
“The Gilded Age” airs on HBO and follows the clash between old money and new money in 1880s New York City.
Coon’s character, Bertha Russell, is the ambitious wife of a railroad tycoon who will stop at nothing to climb the social ladder.

The show was created by Julian Fellowes, best known for creating “Downton Abbey.”
Swift’s impression of Bertha focused on the character’s distinctive accent and imperious tone.
Coon noted that Swift captured “the right affectation” of the character.
“She’s so Bertha,” Coon said.
Coon’s full interview with Fallon aired Wednesday night on NBC.
Swift has not commented publicly on Coon’s praise.
But the clip of Swift’s original impression continues to circulate online, now with the added weight of the actress’s approval.
Whether this leads to a cameo remains an open question.
For now, fans of both Swift and “The Gilded Age” have reason to hope.
