Gotham FC Enters NWSL Playoffs As Top Seed After Clinching First-Ever Shield

The two-time NWSL champions Gotham FC enter the playoffs as the number one overall seed after clinching their first Shield with a 2-0 win over the Utah Royals.
That home victory at Sports Illustrated Stadium closed out the regular season in historic style for the club.
According to Goal.com, "The reigning champions and two-time NWSL title winners clinched their first Shield with a 2-0 victory over Utah Royals, giving fans at Sports Illustrated Stadium another reason to celebrate."
Now, the number one ranked team in the league shifts its focus to the postseason tournament.
Their quest begins at home in New Jersey in the opening quarterfinal round.
HISTORIC SHIELD AND POSTSEASON MOMENTUM
The NWSL Shield is awarded annually to the club with the best regular-season record across the entire league.
While Gotham FC previously secured two league championship trophies, this marks their first time finishing atop the regular-season standings.
The 2-0 result against Utah gave them the points necessary to hold off the rest of the field.
Finishing as the top seed guarantees home-field advantage through the early rounds of the postseason bracket.

Under league rules, the higher-seeded team hosts both the quarterfinal and semifinal matches, provided venue availability allows it.
That puts Gotham FC in prime position to make another deep run toward the trophy.
DECISION DAY SETS THE FINAL TABLE
The final weekend of regular-season play delivered drama across the entire 16-team league table.
Individual awards and final playoff tickets came down to the final whistles of the campaign.
North Carolina Courage forward Ashley Sanchez earned the regular-season Golden Boot after scoring 20 goals.
The Courage defeated Denver Summit 1-0 in their final match to keep their postseason hopes alive.
Despite the victory, results elsewhere across the league meant North Carolina ultimately missed out on the postseason.
Denver, North Carolina, and Seattle all entered the final stretch battling for the eighth and final playoff berth.
When the dust settled, it was Seattle Reign FC that emerged with the coveted spot.

FAIRYTALE FINISH FOR SEATTLE
Seattle Reign FC secured their ninth playoff berth in club history with a tense 1-0 victory over the Orlando Pride.
The match carried deep emotional weight for the club and its supporters.
It marked the final home match in Seattle for long-time icon Jess Fishlock.
The Reign took full advantage of their opportunity against an Orlando team playing without leading scorer Barbra Banda.
Brittany Ratcliffe scored for Seattle Reign FC to help seal the pivotal result.
The victory kept Seattle's season alive and booked a cross-country flight to New Jersey.
Supporters in the Pacific Northwest will gather to back their team from afar, with Seattle Reign FC hosting an official playoff watch party at Rough & Tumble.
THE COMPLETE QUARTERFINAL SCHEDULE
The top eight teams in the league now enter the single-elimination tournament.

Four quarterfinal fixtures will take place across the opening weekend of postseason action.
The action kicks off on Friday, November 6, at 7:00 p.m. PT.
In that opener, San Diego Wave FC will host Utah Royals FC, with live streaming coverage provided by Prime Video.
The second quarterfinal takes place on Saturday, November 7, at 9:00 a.m. PT.
That match features the Kansas City Current hosting Angel City FC, broadcast nationally on CBS and streaming on Paramount+.
Sunday, November 8, features a nationally televised doubleheader starting at 9:30 a.m. PT.
Top-seeded Gotham FC will host the eighth-seeded Seattle Reign in New Jersey.
The Gotham-Seattle clash will air nationally on ABC and ESPN Deportes, while streaming on the ESPN App for unlimited subscribers.
Later that day at 12:00 p.m. PT, Washington Spirit will host the Portland Thorns.
That match will also air nationally on ABC and ESPN Deportes, alongside live streaming on the ESPN App.

POSTSEASON FORMAT AND OVERTIME RULES
The NWSL playoffs follow a strict single-elimination format throughout the bracket.
The winner of each fixture advances to the next stage, while the losing team sees its season come to a close.
Because every match requires an outright winner, standard regular-season tie procedures no longer apply.
If any quarterfinal contest remains level after 90 minutes of regulation, the teams will play two 15-minute extra time periods.
During extra time, clubs are permitted to use an additional substitute player.
Clubs will also receive one additional substitution window during the extra time periods.
If the score remains tied at the conclusion of extra time, a penalty shoot-out will decide which team advances.
THE BRACKET PATH TO AUDI FIELD
The tournament bracket dictates the path forward for the semifinal round beginning the weekend of November 13.

The winner of the matchup between the number 1 seed Gotham FC and the number 8 seed Seattle Reign FC will face the winner of the 4 versus 5 seed matchup.
On the other side of the bracket, the winner of the 2 versus 7 game will meet the winner of the 3 versus 6 contest.
The two surviving semifinal winners will advance directly to the NWSL Championship match.
Presented by Google Pixel, the league championship game will take place on November 21.
The title decider will be held at Audi Field in Washington, D.C.
HIGH STAKES IN NEW JERSEY
For Gotham FC, Sunday's quarterfinal against Seattle represents the first hurdle in defending their championship pedigree.
Everything is on the line as the league's top-ranked side squares off against a battle-tested Reign roster.
Seattle fought through elimination pressure just to reach this stage and enters with momentum of their own.
Yet Gotham FC has proven their consistency across the entire regular-season campaign.
Their recent 2-0 triumph over Utah showed the sharpness and control that defined their run to the Shield.
Playing on their home pitch, the top seeds aim to validate their regular-season dominance in knockout soccer.
Can anyone stop Gotham FC from following up their first Shield with another NWSL Championship?
