Jessica Pegula Caught on Hot Mic Calling Rival a ‘Diva

Jessica Pegula was caught on a hot mic trashing rival Mirra Andreeva during a practice session at the WTA Finals in Indian Wells.
The American tennis pro did not hold back.
She called the 19-year-old French Open champion a 'diva' who 'needs to be humbled.'
She also criticized Andreeva's coach, Conchita Martínez, for what Pegula described as encouraging bad behavior.
The conversation was picked up by a microphone on the court and has since circulated online.
Pegula's comments have added tension to what was already a high-stakes tournament.
Here is exactly what Pegula said, according to multiple reports.
"Conchita's always been very nice to me, but I lost a little respect for her because I'm just like this girl," Pegula said.

"I think she's a nice girl but she's a diva. She needs to be humbled."
Pegula then described a specific moment during practice.
"If I was a coach and my girl, you just played four great games and you're up 4-0 and you're mad at me, hitting balls at me … first of all, that's disrespectful to the other person … like shut the f— up."
She continued her criticism of Martínez.
"Conchita like pokes her and eggs on her behavior … She has a perfect serve, she's smart, she anticipates well, but she's crazy."
Pegula's coach also chimed in, saying Andreeva needs to be 'put in her place.'
Pegula then brought up Coco Gauff, comparing the two players' mental approaches.
"It's so funny how you see her and you see Coco's mentality — like if she has Coco's mentality, she's better than Coco … the serve, everything, all around and moves just as good, but mentally, she's just…" Pegula said.

Andreeva has not publicly responded to Pegula's comments.
But reporters are expected to ask about them in the coming days.
The WTA Finals do not begin until Sunday, but the drama is already here.
Pegula is scheduled to play Coco Gauff on Sunday in the group stage.
Andreeva will face Elina Svitolina on Monday.
If both players advance, they could meet in the semifinals.
Pegula and Andreeva have never played a singles match against each other.
But they have met three times in doubles and mixed doubles.

Andreeva leads their head-to-head 2-1.
Their first meeting was at the 2025 Qatar Open, where Andreeva and her partner Diana Shnaider defeated Pegula and Ashlyn Krueger in a match tiebreak.
Pegula got revenge at the 2025 US Open mixed doubles tournament, where she and Jack Draper beat Andreeva and Daniil Medvedev in straight sets.
Their most recent meeting was at the 2026 Italian Open, where Andreeva and Shnaider defeated Pegula and Storm Hunter 6-1, 6-2.
The hot-mic incident has dominated headlines ahead of the tournament.
After the video went viral, the WTA reportedly wiped all practice footage, including the session between Pegula and Andreeva.
But the audio is still widely available online.
The incident has divided fans.

Some have defended Pegula, saying she was speaking honestly about behavior she witnessed on the court.
Others have called her comments unprofessional and disrespectful.
Andreeva, who turned 19 in April, won the French Open in 2026, becoming one of the youngest Grand Slam champions in history.
She is known for her powerful serve and court awareness, but also for occasional on-court outbursts.
Pegula, 32, is the daughter of Buffalo Bills owner Terry Pegula.
She is one of the top American players on the tour and has been a consistent presence in the WTA top 10.
The WTA Finals are being held at Indian Wells, California, through November.
The tournament brings together the top eight singles players and doubles teams of the season.

Pegula qualified for the singles event but is also playing doubles.
Andreeva qualified for both singles and doubles as well.
The two players are in different groups for the round-robin stage.
For them to meet in singles, one would need to win her group and the other finish second in the opposite group.
That would set up a semifinal matchup.
Given the tension, a match between Pegula and Andreeva would be one of the most anticipated of the tournament.
The WTA has not issued a statement about the incident.
Neither player has addressed the situation directly.
But the story is not going away.
With the tournament yet to begin, the hot-mic moment has already made this year's WTA Finals one of the most talked-about in recent memory.
