Rybakina snaps at coach in heated WTA Finals practice spat

Rybakina snaps at coach in heated WTA Finals practice spat

The WTA Finals in Indian Wells have barely started, and already the tournament is dealing with a second hot-mic controversy in as many days.

World No. 1 Elena Rybakina was caught on live microphones during a practice session on Stadium 2, appearing to lose her temper with her coach, Stefano Vukov.

The exchange happened as Rybakina was practicing with Linda Nosková ahead of the season-ending tournament.

Footage circulating on social media shows Rybakina stopping Vukov as they walked toward the net.

“Stay here. I’m talking to you!” she told him, visibly irritated.

She then appeared to direct him to a specific position, adding: “Can you stand over here?”

The precise subject of their disagreement remains unclear.

Unlike the earlier incident involving Jessica Pegula — who was caught making critical remarks about Mirra Andreeva and her coach, Conchita Martinez — Rybakina was not heard discussing another player.

The focus has instead shifted to her interaction with Vukov, a coaching relationship that has been under scrutiny for years.

Vukov was suspended by the WTA in February 2025 following an independent investigation into his behavior toward Rybakina.

The suspension brought considerable attention to their working relationship and raised questions about the coach’s conduct.

Rybakina has consistently defended Vukov, saying he never abused her and criticizing the WTA’s disciplinary process.

He returned to her team in August 2025, renewing a partnership that had already attracted considerable scrutiny.

His coaching methods and on-court demeanor have frequently been debated among tennis followers.

The latest footage has made the history particularly noteworthy.

Fans and commentators have reacted strongly — not to Rybakina’s behavior, but to the WTA’s decision to broadcast the exchange.

“This is so cringe. And WTA thinks this is great for the sport? Turning it into a circus for content?” one user wrote on Reddit.

“Just sue WTA, ATP,” another stated.

“I really hate this. Turning private moments into a circus & dragging these players into scandal & setting them up for harassment,” a user noted.

“I hate this, too. It does nothing other than creating unnecessary drama... Players are human, too. Everyone expresses some sort of negativity in their private moments, it’s really no big deal!” another added.

French outlet Tennis Temple noted that players and coaches did not appear to be aware that their conversation would be on broadcast.

The clip kept circulating on social media, and by Thursday, the exchange had become the second flashpoint just three days before the year-ending showpiece event begins.

The WTA Finals are taking place from November 8 to 15 at Indian Wells.

Eight players are competing for the season-ending title: Rybakina, Aryna Sabalenka, Coco Gauff, Jessica Pegula, Mirra Andreeva, Elina Svitolina, Linda Nosková, and Karolina Muchova.

Rybakina is the defending champion, having won the title in Riyadh last year by defeating Sabalenka in the final.

That perfect campaign earned her $5.235 million, the largest individual payout in women’s sporting history at the time.

This year, the total prize pool has fallen from $15.5 million to $10 million, a reduction of $5.5 million.

Even if Rybakina repeats her undefeated run, she can earn a maximum of $3.37 million — $1.865 million less than last year.

The ranking points available remain unchanged, with an undefeated champion still able to earn 1,500 points.

The controversy over the hot-mic incident has overshadowed the start of the tournament.
