Slegers vows Arsenal Women will bounce back at Liverpool.

Renée Slegers backs Arsenal Women to bounce back in WSL clash away at Liverpool.
The Arsenal Women head coach made the pledge in her pre-match press conference ahead of Sunday’s away fixture at Liverpool.
Arsenal currently sit 7th in the Women’s Super League table with 10 points from eight games.
They have scored only eight goals in those eight matches — the lowest total among any team in the top half of the table.
“It’s not where we want to be,” Slegers said.
“We know what to do better and differently, we have our own reflections as a staff as well, how we set things up, and we move from there.”
The Dutch manager did not dodge the question of what has gone wrong in the final third.
“We want to be unpredictable and create in a variety of ways, but we’ve definitely looked at a couple of things that we think we need to nail in the final thirds against low blocks and do them consistently well,” she said.

Arsenal have drawn four of their eight league games this season, including a 1-1 result at home against Aston Villa on November 8.
That match followed a pattern Slegers acknowledged has become a problem.
“I think what’s been happening is that at the start of the season at Emirates — because we’re aware that we haven’t won at Emirates yet this year in the WSL, which is not where we want to be, but the fact that one team gets success the way they do at Emirates I think has built belief probably, if I’m doing my analysis here, into other teams who are then doing similar things and stopping us and frustrating us,” she said.
She pointed to the Villa match as an example.
“Like Villa, for example, they’ve had one shot and one goal in that game and we haven’t been able to break that down well enough,” Slegers said.
“I think there’s a piece of that belief building in the opposition as well, which is what we’ve created ourselves, but we have to manage.”
Slegers was asked whether playing away from home eases the pressure on her squad.
“No, I think that there’s no pressure,” she said.

“There is pressure, but the pressure is different when we play at home.”
“We’re proud to play at the Emirates and play in front of the fans,” she added.
“I think, like I just said, those games, the way they’ve played out and how opposition has stopped us and disrupted us at the Emirates, that’s been the issue.”
“However that’s not the pressure or the fact that those results have been at Emirates.”
“We love playing at Emirates.”
Slegers said she has taken responsibility for the team’s mindset.
“At the end of the day I’m responsible for the group,” she said.
“It’s my responsibility, and then following that it’s my responsibility to create the energy.”

“The way I present myself, what I choose to focus on, going in there with energy and a smile, even though the natural reaction is to not smile, because it’s difficult for us right now,” she added.
She stressed the importance of not letting past results affect the next performance.
“Making sure that what’s been and what’s behind us is not affecting us too much going forward,” she said.
“There’s energy within the staff and player group and there’s motivation and ambition to do better and turn it around.”
Liverpool will be a tough test.
The Reds are unbeaten at home in the league so far this season.
Slegers praised their structure and mentality.
“I think they’ve added some players to their squad as well,” she said.

“It looks really well balanced, and I think they make it difficult for teams.”
“And they will try to do that on Sunday as well, which we’ll have to break down.”
Arsenal’s last trip to Liverpool ended in a 3-1 win on the final day of last season.
That match was the last appearance in an Arsenal shirt for club legends Katie McCabe and Beth Mead.
“It was a special moment for us,” Slegers recalled.
“We have good memories of the football that we’ve played there.”
“But everything is new now,” she added.
Slegers closed with a direct message to supporters.

“I am convinced that on Sunday, you’ll see a good Arsenal team,” she said.
Arsenal will need to prove that conviction on the pitch.
Kickoff at Liverpool’s home ground is scheduled for Sunday, November 15.
The match will be broadcast on Sky Sports in the UK and on Sportsnet One in Canada.
A win would lift Arsenal into the top five and cut the gap to the league leaders.
A loss would leave them stuck in the bottom half with nearly half the season gone.
Slegers made clear she understands the stakes.
“We can only look at ourselves, and look at how we’re going to use spaces and how we’re going to break it down,” she said.
That will be the task on Sunday.
