Tiger Woods Eyes $3M Return Next Week as Buzz Grows

Tiger Woods could return to competitive golf next week at a $3 million championship on the PGA Tour Champions, according to a fellow player who says the buzz inside the locker room is real.

Steven Alker, a New Zealander who has won multiple times on the senior circuit, told reporters that Woods wants to compete and that the rumor has been building among players.

“He wants to add to his tally,” Alker said, referring to Woods’ career win count.

The tournament in question is the Charles Schwab Cup Championship, the season-ending event on the PGA Tour Champions schedule.

It is being held Nov. 12-15 in Phoenix, Arizona, at Phoenix Country Club.

The purse is $3 million, with the winner taking home $550,000.

The field is limited to the top 36 players on the season-long Charles Schwab Cup points list.

Woods has not played a competitive round since the PNC Championship in December 2024, where he teamed with his son Charlie.

He underwent back surgery in September 2024 and has been rehabbing since.

The PGA Tour Champions is the senior tour for players age 50 and older.

Woods turned 50 on Dec. 30, 2025, making him eligible for the first time.

He has not yet committed to any event on the senior circuit.

Alker said the talk is not just speculation — it is coming from people who would know.

“There’s a lot of inside talk that he might play,” Alker said.

“He wants to play. He wants to add to his tally.”

Alker is a respected voice on the tour, having won the 2022 Charles Schwab Cup and multiple other events.

He is currently ranked fifth on the season-long points list.

Woods has 82 PGA Tour wins, tied with Sam Snead for the all-time record.

He has 15 major championships, second only to Jack Nicklaus’ 18.

Adding to his tally would mean surpassing Snead outright or adding a senior major to his resume.

The Charles Schwab Cup Championship is not a major on the senior tour, but it is the richest event of the season.

A win there would be his first on the PGA Tour Champions.

Woods has not won any tournament since the 2019 Zozo Championship on the PGA Tour.

His last senior-level appearance was at the 2024 PNC Championship, a parent-child event that is not an official tour stop.

Woods has not commented publicly on the possibility of playing next week.

His agent, Mark Steinberg, has not responded to requests for confirmation.

The PGA Tour Champions has not released a field list for the event yet.

The tournament begins Nov. 12, which is six days from today.

If Woods does play, it would be his first official start as a senior.

It would also be his first competitive round in 11 months.

The course at Phoenix Country Club is a par-72 layout that measures 7,200 yards.

It has hosted the Charles Schwab Cup Championship since 2023.

The field includes the top seniors in the world, including Ernie Els, Bernhard Langer and Vijay Singh.

Alker said Woods’ presence would be a huge boost for the tour.

“It would be great for the event, great for the tour,” Alker said.

“Everyone would love to see him out here.”

Woods has played only a handful of rounds in public since his back surgery.

He was seen practicing at The Medalist Golf Club in Hobe Sound, Florida, in late October.

Video posted on social media showed him hitting drivers and irons with no visible discomfort.

He has also been spotted playing casual rounds with friends at private clubs in Florida.

His swing speed appeared to be lower than his peak, but smooth and repeatable.

Woods has a history of defying expectations after injuries.

He won the 2019 Masters 14 months after spinal fusion surgery.

He played in the 2022 Masters 14 months after a car crash that nearly cost him his right leg.

He made the cut at the 2024 Masters despite limited preparation.

The PGA Tour Champions is considered less physically demanding than the PGA Tour.

Courses are typically shorter, and the competition is one round fewer — 54 holes instead of 72.

That may make it a more realistic stage for Woods’ current physical condition.

Alker said he has not spoken directly to Woods about his plans.

But he said the chatter among players is consistent.

“You hear things in the locker room,” Alker said.

“Guys are talking. It’s not just one person saying it.”

Woods has not ruled out playing on the senior tour.

In interviews earlier this year, he said he would consider it once his health allowed.

He has also said he wants to continue playing in the majors on the PGA Tour.

The Charles Schwab Cup Championship does not conflict with any PGA Tour event next week.

The PGA Tour is in Bermuda for the Butterfield Bermuda Championship.

That tournament has a field of 132 and a purse of $6.9 million.

Woods has never played in Bermuda.

If he enters the senior event, it would be his first appearance in Arizona since the 2024 WM Phoenix Open.

He missed the cut there.

The Charles Schwab Cup Championship will be broadcast on Golf Channel.

Tickets are still available for the event.

The tournament is expected to draw larger crowds if Woods commits.

Alker said he hopes Woods plays, both for the competition and for the fans.
