WWE Blocked Chad Gable’s GCW Debut at the Last Minute

GCW promoter Brett Lauderdale revealed on November 5, 2026 that WWE superstar Chad Gable was booked for Josh Barnett's Bloodsport X in April 2024.
Lauderdale made the revelation in a series of posts on his X account.
Those posts have since been deleted.
According to Lauderdale, GCW had a match graphic ready for the official announcement.
Everything was in place.
Then WWE changed course about an hour before GCW planned to make the news public.
“We had Chad Gable booked for a Bloodsport once, but plans changed like an hour b4 it was to be announced,” Lauderdale wrote.
He added: “We had a match graphic ready to go and everything… who wants to see it and who do you think he was gonna face????”
The planned opponent was former ROH World Champion Jonathan Gresham.
Lauderdale described the potential matchup in strong terms.
“It was supposed to be Chad Gable vs. Jonathan Gresham, and it would have been one of the greatest matches of all time lol, but alas, WWE changed course at the last minute because Chad wanted to focus on WrestleMania (which I understand),” he wrote.
Lauderdale added: “It ended up being a landmark event regardless.”
Bloodsport X took place on April 4, 2024 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
The event was held during WrestleMania 40 weekend.
Gable did not end up competing at WrestleMania 40.
He lost the final fall in a Gauntlet Match to Sami Zayn on Monday Night Raw.
That win allowed Zayn to challenge GUNTHER for the WWE Intercontinental Championship at WrestleMania 40.
Zayn went on to defeat GUNTHER and end his historic Intercontinental Championship reign.

Gable also did not appear on the previous night's WWE SmackDown in Philadelphia.
Despite Gable's absence, Bloodsport X still featured WWE talent.
Shayna Baszler and Charlie Dempsey competed at the event.
CM Punk and WWE president Nick Khan were among those in attendance.
Bloodsport X was a landmark event for GCW.
Josh Barnett announced in April 2026 that Bloodsport would shut down for the foreseeable future.
That closure means the Gable vs. Gresham matchup may never happen.
Lauderdale's deleted posts have sparked renewed discussion about WWE's control over its talent's outside appearances.
WWE has a long history of blocking or pulling talent from independent shows.
In some cases, the company allows talent to work outside dates as long as they do not conflict with WWE commitments.
In other cases, WWE has pulled talent at the last minute for reasons that were never fully explained.
The Gable situation falls into the latter category.
Gable was under a WWE contract in April 2024.
He has been with WWE since 2015, when he signed after competing in the Olympics.
Gable is a former WWE Intercontinental Champion.
He has also held the WWE Raw Tag Team Championship and the WWE SmackDown Tag Team Championship.
Gresham is a former ROH World Champion.
He is widely regarded as one of the best technical wrestlers in the world.

A match between Gable and Gresham would have been a technical wrestling dream.
Both competitors are known for their amateur wrestling backgrounds and mat-based styles.
Gable competed in the 2012 Olympics in Greco-Roman wrestling.
Gresham has trained extensively in catch wrestling and submission grappling.
The match would have been contested under Bloodsport rules.
Bloodsport is a shoot-style wrestling event promoted by Josh Barnett.
Matches are presented as legitimate shoot fights with no ropes and no pinfalls.
The only way to win is by knockout or submission.
The format is designed to showcase technical wrestling and striking.
Bloodsport events have featured talent from WWE, AEW, NJPW, ROH, and the independent scene.
Barnett, a former UFC Heavyweight Champion, created the concept in 2018.
The event has run annually during WrestleMania weekend.
Bloodsport X was the tenth installment of the event.
The card included matches featuring Josh Barnett, Minoru Suzuki, and other notable names.
Lauderdale's revelation has generated significant interest among wrestling fans.
Many fans have expressed disappointment that the match never happened.
Some have criticized WWE for pulling Gable from the event.
Others have noted that Gable did not end up with a WrestleMania match anyway.

Lauderdale's posts were made on November 5, 2026.
They were deleted shortly after being posted.
It is unclear why Lauderdale deleted the posts.
He did not provide an explanation for the deletion.
The match graphic that GCW prepared has not been released publicly.
Lauderdale hinted at its existence but did not share it.
WWE has not commented on Lauderdale's revelation.
Gable has not commented on the situation.
Gresham has not commented on the situation.
The story remains one of the most intriguing what-ifs from WrestleMania 40 weekend.
It also raises questions about WWE's policies regarding talent appearances.
Under current WWE management, the company has loosened some restrictions.
Several WWE stars have appeared at independent events in recent years.
But the company still reserves the right to block or pull talent at any time.
The Gable situation shows how quickly those decisions can be made.
An hour before an announcement is a very short window.
GCW had already invested time and resources into the booking.
The match graphic was ready.

The opponent was confirmed.
Then it all fell apart.
Lauderdale said he understood the decision.
But his posts suggest a lingering sense of what could have been.
“It would have been one of the greatest matches of all time lol,” he wrote.
The “lol” does not hide the disappointment.
For fans of technical wrestling, the missed opportunity is significant.
Gable and Gresham are two of the most skilled wrestlers in the world.
A Bloodsport match would have allowed them to showcase their abilities without the restrictions of standard WWE rules.
The match could have been a classic.
But it will never happen now.
Bloodsport is shut down.
Gable is still under WWE contract.
Gresham continues to wrestle on the independent circuit.
The window for that matchup has closed.
Lauderdale's revelation is a reminder of how quickly plans can change in professional wrestling.
It is also a reminder of the power WWE holds over its talent.
For one hour in April 2024, the wrestling world was about to get a dream match.
Then it was gone.
And all that remains is a deleted tweet and a graphic that nobody has seen.
