Kyle Shanahan Admits He Has Moved On Mentally As Brandon Aiyuk Prepares Friday Return

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan says he has no expectations and has already moved on mentally, even as Brandon Aiyuk prepares to report to the facility on Friday.

The wide receiver's push to get back on the field has arrived with sudden force after more than two years away from game action.

Yet the man running the San Francisco offense made it abundantly clear this week that his mindset has not shifted one bit.

Shanahan addressed the media on Wednesday regarding the surprise development surrounding his former top target.

"I have no expectation," Shanahan said bluntly when asked about the situation.

"Kind of moved on with that mentally and everything, and kind of how I talked to you guys two months ago, nothing’s really changed for me."

Those words delivered a cold dose of reality to an already chaotic saga.

Aiyuk has officially taken the administrative steps to make his way back into professional football.

His new agent, Drew Rosenhaus, confirmed to ESPN on Wednesday that the 28-year-old receiver has formally applied for reinstatement to the NFL.

According to Rosenhaus, Aiyuk is completely prepared to rejoin team activities immediately.

"Brandon is healthy and ready to get back on the field," Rosenhaus stated.

The veteran pass-catcher has scheduled his return to the 49ers' team facility for Friday.

That planned arrival sets the stage for what could be an incredibly awkward reunion in Santa Clara.

A SHATTERED RELATIONSHIP

The standoff between Aiyuk and the San Francisco front office has been building for years.

Aiyuk has not played a snap of NFL football since Oct. 20, 2024.

On that afternoon, the standout receiver suffered a devastating torn ACL in his right knee.

The injury completely halted his season and triggered a disastrous series of off-field disputes.

Before the knee injury occurred, Aiyuk had signed a massive four-year, $120 million contract extension with San Francisco in August 2024.

The extension was supposed to secure his role as an offensive cornerstone for the long term.

Instead, disagreements quickly emerged between the player and the organization regarding his physical recovery.

The friction reached a breaking point during the summer of 2025.

In July 2025, the 49ers took the severe step of voiding roughly $27 million in remaining guaranteed money from Aiyuk's contract.

The team made that financial move after Aiyuk failed to attend mandatory check-ins and rehabilitation sessions.

The situation escalated further as the calendar turned toward winter.

San Francisco placed Aiyuk on the reserve/did not report list last December after he entirely stopped reporting to the facility to rehab his knee.

Throughout the entire ordeal, Aiyuk remained isolated on the team's reserve/left squad list.

PUBLIC BITTERNESS AND SOCIAL MEDIA FEUDS

Rather than keeping the dispute behind closed doors, Aiyuk took his grievances straight to the public.

Over the course of the 2026 offseason, the wideout repeatedly criticized the organization on social media.

He vented his frustrations openly, calling the 49ers front office "dumb" and "stupid" for paying him in the first place.

Aiyuk also claimed that the organization was terrified of facing him on the field if he joined an opposing roster.

At several points throughout the year, he publicly vowed that he would never step foot inside the 49ers' team facility ever again.

Instead of preparing for a Bay Area comeback, Aiyuk openly campaigned for a fresh start with the Washington Commanders.

He shared multiple photos and videos on his social media accounts wearing official Commanders apparel.

Aiyuk even revealed that he had purchased a residence in Northern Virginia located near the Commanders' headquarters.

His affinity for Washington is directly tied to his close personal friendship with quarterback Jayden Daniels.

The two players developed a strong bond while sharing a single collegiate season together at Arizona State.

Daniels, however, has stayed completely quiet publicly throughout Aiyuk's prolonged dispute with San Francisco.

FRONT OFFICE STANCE REMAINS UNMOVED

Aiyuk's decision to report on Friday leaves the 49ers front office holding all the cards.

Because the receiver remains under contract, San Francisco retains total control over his playing rights.

General manager John Lynch has made his own perspective clear across several public appearances.

In January, Lynch stated plainly that "it's safe to say that he's played his last snap with the Niners."

Lynch has echoed that sentiment multiple times, insisting that Aiyuk's tenure with the franchise is effectively over.

The team has actively explored trade options across the league to move on from the disgruntled receiver.

However, San Francisco has been unable to secure a trade partner willing to complete a deal.

The clock is ticking rapidly if the 49ers hope to resolve the matter on the trade market.

The NFL regular-season trade deadline is set for Tuesday at 4 p.m. ET.

If a trade cannot be finalized before that deadline, the 49ers must decide whether to activate him, release him, or keep him sidelined.

LOCKER ROOM REACTIONS REMAIN CAUTIOUS

While the front office weighs its options, members of the 49ers locker room have maintained a measured distance.

Several team leaders were asked this week about the possibility of Aiyuk stepping back through the facility doors.

Running back Christian McCaffrey made it clear that roster construction is completely out of his hands.

"I don't make any of those decisions, so it's not on my radar," McCaffrey said, according to The Athletic.

"I just focus on my job," McCaffrey added.

"I haven't thought about it."

Defensive end Nick Bosa struck a slightly more personal note when discussing his longtime teammate.

"Oh man. I don't know. Not my place, really," Bosa told reporters.

"I'll dap him up," Bosa admitted.

"No hard feelings between me and him."

All-Pro linebacker Fred Warner also chose not to delve deeply into the front-office drama.

"Yeah. I don't know if I really have anything to say about it," Warner stated.
